The Dangerousness of Mercury Vapor

I still find it bizarre that they use mercury in thermometers made of millimetre thick glass. If you drop it by accident...

...it's a bugger to pick up. I did that in physics at school - nowadays I suspect the school would be evacuated on environmental hazard grounds.
Ideological Purity is no substitute for being able to stick your thumb down a pipe to stop the water

Not for those tiny amounts. I have about 50ml of it. It is rather heavy, but fun. Drop a pound coin into it and it floats, weird when you see it.

It's nasty stuff all right - mercury poisoning is still called "Mad Hatter's disease"

I have a mercury tilt switch, but I've wrapped it up in bubble wrap and kept it safely in a box ;P

I have a picture of the planet Mercury. I realize that is it unlikely to drop and get broken, but do you think I should gift wrap my HDD with tension sheet to be on the safe side?

Mercury tilt-switches were commonly used in home thermostat controls.

Well, sort of. I mean, he was being almost constantly poisoned by it for 25 years and, all things considered, it could've been worse. What's really nasty are the organic compounds of mercury: for example, a few drops of dimethylmercury on a latex-gloved hand for a few seconds is fatal.
