Which apparently stands for God 4 Saken, as in how do the hell do we get out of this G4S security contract. What no security staff[^] This whole story about G4S being totally unprepared to provide security for the Olympics, and the whistle blower saying the chances of getting a weapon into a venue were 50 / 50 that was running on Sky News all day long last week. Is it just me who thinks it is a bit irresponsible to run these stories so prolifically? The entire British media has spent the weekend saying to terrorists groups, and any individual nutters, "Go on, have a go. You've got a good chance of success you know".

Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends. Shed Petition[^]

You need not worry. The Brand Police will save the day. "Is that an officially sanctioned weapon as authorised by the IOC? No? Go on chummy. Hop it."

I'm also hearing a rumour that some of the G4S uniforms have gone missing. A well-known tactic of Al-Queida to infiltrate security, is to do so dressed as security.

I went to a Led Zeppelin cover band at the House of Blues in Chicago a few years ago. I was with a couple of friends and while standing in line we observed that everyone who entered the concert hall was scanned using a hand held metal detector. Both of my friends had switch blades at the time. We walked into that concert hall with no problems whatsoever - switch blades and all. The technique they used to get the blades in could have been used on a handgun, a bomb, or a tactical nuclear warhead. The thing is, my friends weren't terrorists. They didn't evaluate the security for months and put their lives on the line in order to score a big kill for their religion. No, my friends looked at the security set up and had a work around in seconds. They weren't even trying - security is just that much of a scam. That is when I learned that security isn't there to actually make things secure. Security is there to make the common man think the venue is safe. It's as much of a show as the actual concert. Enjoy the show.

Exactly. Perception is more important than reality. Therefore explaining to everyone exactly what the reality is is a very stupid thing to do. As a wise man once said "You want the truth? You can't handle the truth".

I can think of a couple of good reasons to make this common knowledge: 1: If we let the security people continue to bullsh*t us they'll keep up the almost entirely worthless show and not make any substantive changes. 2: If we know the venue isn't secure perphas everyone will be a bit more alert, which is a really good thing. I think the bad guys already know the security is nonsense. I don't see the harm in letting the every day guy know it.

It's probably the one off crazy or someone trying to impress who will be given most encouragement by the stories.

Now I think you're probably right about that one. It won't make a difference for the big planners but probably would for the drunk guy whose team just lost.

Don't be daft -- it's all a plot to get more soldiers into the area. The government wants to put on a show of military strength to foreign governments, and to make sure that residents know that it has control of lots of big men with guns.

If something happens, the press will be blamed, allowing the gov to pass laws to control the press even more "for your safety"

That will most definitely not happen. The government have zero control over the press and are currently having a massive struggle to stop the press having so much control over them.

Any terrorist with half a brain would already be working for G4S, since it is obviously managed by people with less intelligence than that.

I would hope that any self respecting terrorist who did infiltrate G4S would have walked out again when they saw how badly run the place was.

Don't be daft -- it's all a plot to get more soldiers into the area. The government wants to put on a show of military strength to foreign governments, and to make sure that residents know that it has control of lots of big men with guns.
