Can we cut the Olympics by two weeks and give us all a full refund? I know which I'd rather have...

I was watching an interview on the BBC the other day where they were talking about why the British public really couldn't give a toss about the games. The presenter maintained that the whole country benefits (err, we really don't - stop thinking that the inner circle of the M25 represents the whole country), and that we would love the games. It's all very Orwellian. Are we going to have neighbour spying on neighbour, reporting us for not watching every event? It's notable that it's the BBC that is taking this tone - considering their staff gain the most out of the corrupt junket open and honest games. In the north, we're stubborn. The more some jumped up southerner tries to tell us that we will do something, the more we dig our heels in.

Sky[^] reports the opening ceremony might be cut by 30 minutes. I presume then that the good folk of Britain will be getting a refund for the unused time?

If they're cutting it because of money shortages, I'll happily save them a few bob by giving lodgings to a few of the female athletes.

I thought it was "the whole countries benefits are going to pay for the games"?

Anything that may benefit the country in some way == the North hates and despises. In some cases they are right and some wrong although pretty much always the moral highground is theirs. (I am not English) Regarding the Olympics, unless the organization is nicer than Fifa, it will cost Britain money. 2010 world cup cost south africa money (no profit was made and its not like we don't have real problems here) heck they didn't even use the very good musical talent for the world cup songs (ok freshly ground accidently got to be backing but they are better than Shakira by far and AFRICAN!!! Then there's Johnny Clegg (who has a song in George of the Jungle) and a large French following. I am told the spirit was good while the event was on. To be honest one could improve the mood in all places (although England needs it a lot) just by making it law to smile more-_-...

On another forum I occasionally frequent to do with allotments a Canadian woman recently posted about how excited everyone must be over here with the Olympics coming and how great it was when they had the winter games over there. She was quite taken aback by the little bit of indifference and the large amount of anger in the replies. "Restaurants were selling special food of all nations as a tribute to the athletes. I remember having my car detail cleaned for a treat and I was offered the bronze, silver or gold pockage and a percentage of the cost was donated to a fund for comforts for athletes families. " That'd all be banned over here this year. The whole thing feels anything but inclusive, right from the farce of the initial ticket sales. If anyone does try to get involved and spread the games in their community then they get hammered by special laws to protect the tax exempt sponsors. It is all quite hideous.

I'd smile more if we weren't being saddled with a huge bill in the middle of a recession, and we weren't being told that we have to enjoy it. If Londoners want to enjoy it, let them fly at it, but it should be no one else's business but mine if I think it's a colossal waste of money.

I don't think any Londoners are enjoying it. From what I can make out the only enthusiastic people are those who are comfortably well off, live on direct transport lines into London, and into sports.

Sky[^] reports the opening ceremony might be cut by 30 minutes. I presume then that the good folk of Britain will be getting a refund for the unused time?

I'd smile more if we weren't being saddled with a huge bill in the middle of a recession, and we weren't being told that we have to enjoy it. If Londoners want to enjoy it, let them fly at it, but it should be no one else's business but mine if I think it's a colossal waste of money.

I don't actually know whether most Londoners are going to like the Olympics it kind of messes up the transport systems :\. But agreed.
