Thanks, Although Im new to this board, I know that all boards have different cultures. But one thing they all have in common is the tar and feathering one receives by breaking rules. With that said. I have general questions about which languages to learn starting out. Would that be here or under another specific board relating to the language I am interested in?

I'd probably ask in the specific board, around here you will probably get sarcastic answers.

That is a subject that has been discussed many times in the lounge. I would say; C# for all your application stuff, and a good grounding in JavaScript for all your client side web page stuff. If you are looking to develop mobile apps, then you would also need a good insight into Java (for Android Dev) and Objective C (for Apple IoS).

If you have a question related to a specific language the board for that language is probably your best bet, if it's a general question you might get away with it here. Unless everyone is in a collective bad mood (impossible to tell until it's too late). (But if you haven't picked one, I recommend Python, it's pretty easy to learn and the standard library is quite comprehensive.)

Thanks Dave, I figured this topic has come up quite a bit. And yes I agree with everything you mention here. Follow up, I see TONS of .net positions open in my area. (Southern PA) Is .net something I could jump into with no experience? If no, what would be a good stepping stone to get into .net? Also, If I were to tell you that I am a fairly intelligent guy, with laser-like focus on learning new skills, what time frame would it take to learn enough about .net (or any language) to get an entry level position. To give you a benchmark, I passed my CCNA cert after 7 weeks of studying on my own at home. Yes I know, learning a programming language is more involved and I expect to take much longer. Just looking for feedback.

You should be fine then. Visit Microsoft website and download the free express editions of its products and dive in. C# MSDN Page[^]There are plenty articles and video tutorials on there as well.
