Would do you tink about the article ranking ? I think a 4.97 with 70 votings should be ranked higher than an article with 5 / 5 and only 2 votings. Whats your opinion ? I personaly bother to vote only, if I am really interested in an article. The others are just left behind. If others behave the same, then there should be some kind of weighting by the number of votes to determine the rank

In some way I agree with you. But one could always take the number of voters and make some combined statistic to elige the best articles. Or, as you suggested, display this combined statistic as the article's rating. I wrote an article that took 3 votes. Does this means that the article is not interesting? Probably yes ;) but it may also mean that few people here were interested in that topic, or thought they should vote. I think each topic and article has its audience, and rating the article they can tell other people how good they think it is. If an article has a bigger audience, it is simply "more popular", but not "better". Now I have more doubts than when I started writing... oh, well! Cheers, Paolo Messina

The way it works currently means that a recently posted article can shoot up into the 'Top 3 articles' list immediately and gain a little attention. If the article is good it will stay there. If it's not as good as others then a single vote of 4 will knock it behind an article that has 50 votes at 4.9. Natural selection in motion :) cheers, Chris Maunder

- There are three types of average: mean, median and mode. Typically we used the mean calculation (sum votes / # votes) but I guess you are suggesting using one of the others (middle vote or most popular vote rating) - A quick standard deviation calculation would tell you which is most consistent in its scores. In the unlikely event that the scores are pretty close then the most consistent wins surely? Two points though: - A statistician is someone who has his head in an oven and feet in a bucket of ice and states that on average they feel fine. - the value of advice is proportional to the cost [-the material used in a bikini is proportional to the reciprical of the cost, sorry getting carried away!] C++/C# Student. Its not a contest to see who can get the best ranking on their articles. Ya natural selection too.

To be honest, I don't see how it's that big a deal. If Chris wanted to take AOTW to those levels it seems to me a lot of work for something no-one will really care about. Christian #include "std_disclaimer.h" People who love sausage and respect the law should never watch either one being made. The things that come to those who wait are usually the things left by those who got there first.

On a different tack but still relating to improving the Forum here is an idea I have been hitting about for awhile. The original poster of a thread will have an option to say "Yes, thank you, this thread/question is now answered". Answering Yes would relegate that thread to the bottom of the forum (above other Yes answered threads naturally). A lot of the time really interesting posts are hidden way down in the history of the forum and new members or non-regular members tend to miss them, even if they have the exact answer to that thread. Naturally some posts are not really questions, in which case they need not have a "Yes, answered" option.
