Mac OS Mountain Lion

...is installed and working. Which is actually a first for me when it comes to major Mac upgrades. The initial download was fast, then the install said "3 minutes" which blew my mind. Why can't Microsoft have full OS upgrades done in 3 minutes?? Then the reboot, and then... Installing...Estimated completion 34 minutes. Ah. Right. The Apple Reality Distortion Field is alive and kicking. 45 minutes later I come back to the computer to spend a few minutes watching the last 60 seconds pass. Really? In this day and age time estimates are still this bad? And then on to a new reboot, and wait, and wait, and it fires up to a fresh, brand-new OS! That looks exactly the same as the old. Exactly the same. The docking bar is a little more opaque. Safari is updates and now allows actual searching from the address bar. There's a new "Notifications" item in the preferences pane and the notifications icon at the top right (displacing the search from its traditional spot). The one thing I was truly looking forward to was AirPlay mirroring.

I'm looking but nowhere do I see an AirPlay mirror icon in Finder or Safari. MY dream was to be able to play AVI movies in VLC and mirror it to the TV using Airplay. Except a) VLC no longer runs because it says it's from an unidentified developer. I DON'T CARE. Run my app, Mac. I paid for you. Obey me, peasant. b) QuickTime doesn't show an AirPlay icon. c) Nothing seems to show an Airplay icon exempt iTunes. And I already had that. I'm stumped. I'm seriously trying to understand what changes in this release are things that actually affect the user experience. Safari 6 is, well, slightly different, and definitely more laggy when doing downloads. The notification centre is, well, interesting. Maybe. But other than that? A huge big "meh". [Edit: After re-downloading VLC, the Mac is now happy again with the Unidentified Developer. And, to add a cherry on top, the Airply mirror button suddenly appeared on the top menu bar on the left hand side (for those hunting for it). It mirrors, I can watch movies on the TV without going through iTunes. As long as I don't want sound through the TV's speakers. ] [Edit 2: feamster[

" There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image; make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to the Outer Limits." Enjoy! :-D

I bought my download for the heady price of £13.99. It's so cheap that even if it doesn't deliver then it's no different to Microsoft but it's at least 10x-20x cheaper. I'm still trying to see what's really a big plus. The Reminders app looks moderately useful. That's about £3 quids-worth. What the other £10.99 does is a mystery. Ah, I just saw the notifications icon. £1 leaving £9.99 to go.

Isn't Leopard / Snow Leopard / Lion / Mountain Lion for OS X more like MS XP / Vista /Win7 Service Packs (which have been free)

That seems odd. It only mirrors the video? Are you using an HDMI connection from your Apple TV or something else? Do you have the old Apple TV or the new one? Does mirroring sound work from another device like an iPad or an iPhone? I ask because my wife wants me to get her an Apple TV, and one of the features she's interested in is the mirroring from her phone. If she's going to have to listen on the phone and watch on the TV, I want to prepare her for that. :)

Airplay mirroring only mirrors the image, not the sound. Airplay via iTunes or, say, from the YouTube app on an iPhone send audio and video through the AppleTV. We use our phones and iPads and Macbook constantly to send through videos, watch YouTube or even play back movies we've recorded on the iPhone itself. It's just the desktop mirroring that's quiet. That's still annoying though. Maybe if QuickTime or VLC on the Mac would offer AirPlay then we'd be gold. My personal frustration is I have ripped some of my movies from DVD into AVI or MPEG format. However, to play them on the TV I need to convert them again to the iTunes friendly H.264 format which is truly annoying. Or I just fire up my cheap and light ultrabook and send the movie to the TV via WiDi. ;)

Actually your wrong about the audio. Once the airplay has started, if you can control the audio output device (I was usung mac bluray player) and tell it to send the audio to Airplay, it will have sound on the output device.
You're absolutely right. Sound was not an option for me initially but then it seemed to kick in for everything. Much, much better!

I was underwhelmed. The fanboys are gaga over it. To quote Waylon Smithers, "But it's got a new hat!"
