 you introduced the subject. What's your opinion ? Seen from here, originally french troops were sent in Ivory Coast (IC) to protect the french citizens and protect the South and President from the "Rebels" coming from North. Blocked, and hardly, "Rebels" were forced to negociate. France organized a conference with both parties, and probably made everything possible to have an agreement from everybody. End of the Act. The president, the promoter of "Ivoirité" (understand xenophobia)n comes back in Ivory Coast, saying he didn't agreed to anything. At the same time, anti-french riots begin in the capital, Abidjan, with slogans like "France = Afghanistan, Chirac = Ben Laden", "Welcome America, Go home France" and so on. Now France is blocked. The 2500 soldiers would be enough to hold the country, but France would be accused of colonialism. In the other end, when the French Army will evacuate IC, a massive civil war will probably starts, soemthing like the Rwanda. "Sorry to disturb you, but could UN have a look to the problem, please. It's urgent."

I just think its ironic that they want the USA to come help them. What does France think of that?

Probably not a lot. The tragic part is you can see civil war - even possibly genocide - just around the corner. :(( Anna :rose: www.annasplace.me.uk

The picture is of people there holding up signs. The signs say "Help us USA" etc.

If the US did intervene, we would be hated. Its a no-win situation when you are the only superpower.

I expect you would - by whichever faction had most to lose. You can't win in a situation like this. X| I suspect that in a case like this the same would probably be the case for any other nation intervening (as has happened with France, though they've got some historical responsibility for the mess)...but the US is much more high profile at the moment. I thnik that here, globally, people don't care. They probably think it would be better to extract our fellow citizens, our soldiers, and let the natives make a remake of the Rwanda genocide if they want. Personally I think we should ask for a UN resolution. We are military able to stabilize the country and do the job alone, but politically we need "allies", if possible africans or neutral countries. It's no more our responsability, we are no more the colonial power. The current leaders of IC played with the fire of xenophobia, now all the country is ready to burn.
