What to do?

Want to see what other people would do in this case. What would you do if the sound of the persons voice sitting next to you at work made you want to claw out your own hears so you didn't hear it any more? I have tried head phones but the person is old and hard of hearing so they yell and I can hear them no matter how loud I make the music. And trust me I listen to Heavy Metal so I like it very load. And moving cubicles is out too. No one wants to sit next to this person. It doesn't help they want to talk to me all the time either. But I have gotten past that. I just act extremely busy and pissed off all the time. Now they don't talk to me any more. Just wanted to see what other people might have for suggestions.

That person really must have a grating voice! :omg: Noise canceling headphones, yeah, they're more expensive, but you get to keep your ears, hair and sanity. When they talk with you, talk softer, no they won't hear you. That's the point, they'll grow tired of having to say 'WHAT?!" all the time. You have to give it a few days but it should do the trick.
It was broke, so I fixed it.

A quiet talk with your manager is in order. Explain the problem politely and without emotion, and inform him/her that your productivity is being adversely impacted by the noise. Thank you for offering to make the pink noise available. I actually work better with a lot of noise around me. I talked to my manager already and my manager said there was nothing they could do. I am thinking about setting up a mic to record the person than feed the reverse wave into my head phones. I think that would cancel them out completely. Just thought of that from your pink noise example. Thank you very much for that.

YEah they are talking to someone else now. And the head phones don't help. They don't talk to me at all any more. Which honestly I like a lot. They will pretty much talk to any one that will listen for hours on end. They really don't have any work to do and they don't have a life outside work so they use work as a social time. The company doesn't have anything for them to do but they can't rid of them for legal reasons.
Perhaps you can give your other nearby coworkers advice on how to ignore the loudmouth? :-\

Yeah I think I just may pass that information on. I have a feeling that every one already knows that though. They must notice that when other people stop by I have plenty of time and I am in a good mood. Compared to when the annoying person stops by and I bark that I am too busy and don't have time to deal with them.

Maybe they've complained about the noise coming from your headphones and how they have to shout to make themselves heard. Personally, I would talk direct to the person. Nothing nasty, just something along the lines of 'You have a very loud voice and I would appreciate it if you could keep it down a bit as it is very distracting". Failing that record the voice and play it back to your manager so they get a feeling of what you have to suffer. Or you could just stop whining and leave the poor old git alone. :)

Try this.... "Excuse me, can you PLEASE STFU????? - I'm trying to work here!!!!" That ought to do it. Seriously though, I had the same problem at my last company. Had a talker who just wouldn't shut up. I finally went to their boss. If they're being disruptive, and you can't work, report it.

It isn't just the loudness it is also the sound of their voice. I have talked to them about yelling. It helps until they start talking to someone else and they start yelling again. I think if I stop whining the developer community would revoke my card. I think it is ingrained in us to complain. At least every developer I have worked with does. They complain about something than figure out how to fix it.

I had this issue at work. It got so bad that I went out and paid $300 for these[^] Bose Quiet Comfort 15 headphones. It sounds like a lot but it is totally worth it. In fact, after I explained the reason behind my rise in productivity, my boss actually reimbursed me for the headphones. They have both active and passive noise-cancelling effects that quiet the room almost entirely just by turning them on. Actually playing music through them ensures that you won't hear almost anything else even when they are on the lowest volume. Coworkers' annoying voices just melt away when I'm wearing these.

DO NOT HAVE YOUR COMPANY INSTALL A NOISE REDUCTION SYSTEM ! It drives everyone in my office crazy ! Sounds like you are in freaking airplane in the office .. it sucks .
