Billions of blue blistering barnacles - that's precisely my problem! Email me your snail mail address and I'll drop a CD in the mail. It's too large (300MB) to email or upload. /ravi

Want to see what other people would do in this case. What would you do if the sound of the persons voice sitting next to you at work made you want to claw out your own hears so you didn't hear it any more? I have tried head phones but the person is old and hard of hearing so they yell and I can hear them no matter how loud I make the music. And trust me I listen to Heavy Metal so I like it very load. And moving cubicles is out too. No one wants to sit next to this person. It doesn't help they want to talk to me all the time either. But I have gotten past that. I just act extremely busy and pissed off all the time. Now they don't talk to me any more. Just wanted to see what other people might have for suggestions.
Yup, that sounds about right. It wasn't intentional but it worked for me. Unfortunately, I can still hear them across the office.

There's a site for that, is yours different from this? http://www.simplynoise.com/[^] (I used to have a radio tuned between stations a long time ago, had no computer then and never heard of noise having color either :) )
You can download and stream white/pink noise from several sources. I used an analog synth to generate mine, then looped it until it filled 60 minutes. /ravi

I had a similar situation a while ago. I talked to the problem person's team lead and didn't get anywhere so I talked to our mutual boss and we decided the best solution was for me to move desks which I had been asking for anyway so I'm away from problem person now.

Take it up the management chain until something is done. If you're a valuable member of the team, drop hints about quitting – it's surprising how much that is 'impossible' can be done if a company thinks it's going to lose something valuable. If nothing gets done then you can actually quit and find another job. What is the legal reason that he can't be moved on, if there's nothing for him to do? That sounds like the very definition of 'redundancy' and paying severance has to be cheaper than paying a full salary for someone to sit there and disrupt the other workers.

They are worried about the person suing the company. The person is just looking for a reason to sue and they know it. So the company is just letting them be until the person retires or dies. Which ever comes first. The person has already sued the company once so they don't want to risk it again.

Seriously, that is why you need to complain, and encourage others who find it bothersome to do so as well. Often times nobody says anything and the company can't rid themselves of a person like that. If they can fire him for legitimate reasons, they will. A company a friend of mine works for had a person who was constantly bringing charges against people, including my friend. My friend is one of those people who helps everyone and is very considerate of all people. Finally my friend filed a complaint against this person for their behavior. The HR person had told my friend that they have been waiting for someone to complain about the Jack @ss's behavior so they could fire this person for harassing their employees but they could only do so if someone filed a written complaint.
It was broke, so I fixed it.

Many people have done written complaints and verbal complaints about this person. The company doesn't do any thing about it. The company just says there is nothing they can do. One of the reasons people are leaving quickly. I am search for a new job and I have a feeling that is going to be the only way to fix the problem for me. I wish it wasn't that way because I enjoy the people I work with. But a lot is changing here and I don't like the direction the company is going so I am going to move on before I become miserable.
