I wonder if it's had any impact on off shore phone support. (I'll leave the punch lines up to you guys)
India does, as far as I know, struggle with a higher level of corruption.[^] - what this will mean for nuclear waste management, should perhaps be a cause for concern. New power plants are planned to generate about 20% of Indias electrical power - currently at about 3%. Blackouts, like the recent one, may cause India to bring nuclear power plants online faster than they are able to establish proper nuclear waste management facilities.

...although to be fair, the last few years have been good, but before that blackouts and brownouts were not uncommon. Canada's largest city and we all (still) have UPSs as standard. [Speaking of which, we lost power to our building not an hour ago due to a thumper of a storm that's nailing us]

The Nuclear Power Corp of India, which manages the power plants hopes that by the time there's substantial waste to be disposed, some other country would have come up with an effective safe way to dispose the waste and India can simply ride along. The government doesn't care. Most of the 70 year politicians in power will simply be dead by the time the decision looms upon the nation.

The long term solution would be to dump it in space, or some forlorn planet. But for that, we need rockets that do not tend to blow up whimsically.

On the face of it, shipping it off to space seems very expensive - but what is the cost of long term storage? I'm pretty sure those facilities doesn't come cheap either ... perhaps it's not as farfetched as it sounds.

Reality : Just spoke to a friend in Delhi.. it was business as usual. Apparently there was a backup power grid meant for business which kicked in.
No blackout in most Southern states. In addition, all IT service companies and BPOs have their own diesel gensets as do most factories and hotels and even well-heeled folks and politicians so they are spared the effects of outages. What surprised me is that the power network outage hit the Inidan Railways and trains stopped running (not just the Metro in New Delhi). When the state of Tamil Nadu had 8 hours of powercut in areas outside the capital city of Chennai, the railways were the only one with 24-hour power to run the trains and in fact, in the smaller towns, the "retiring rooms" at the railway stations were the only place where you would have air conditioning 24 hours a day. Merely goes to show that South Indians have figured out how to keep the trains running despite the powergrid failure but North Indians can't! Anybody outsourcing any work to North India (otherwise known as the Sick Man of South Asia)? :laugh:
