Is Vertigo really the greatest film of all time?[^] This list is why I don't take much notice of critics.

      I can't really say...I've only seen 2001: A Space Odyssey from the critic's top 10. And I can't even say I particularly liked that one...then again, I haven't seen it recently.

Critics, what do they know? It's just their opinion. I think a general public vote would look very different and vary across age groups. For me it's more like... was I entertained? Did I want to leave? Do I want to see it again? Some of the critically acclaimed movies were stiff and boring but that's just my opinion. :)

It was broke, so I fixed it.

I like that list a lot better. I've actually seen most of those top 10...

The stupid part is that it displaced Citizen Kane. Since both movies are old (Citizen Kane 1941, Vertigo 1958), and neither have been re-released in a super updated, CGI added, Han Solo doesn't fire first versions, how can they suddenly switch places?

Never saw the attraction for The Shawshank Redemption. Movies based on Steven King novels pretty much suck across the board.

Take that back! The Shining. You're going to lump that into sucking across the board?

That list is definitely violent/cult/new movie leaning. Why no comedies? I'm sorry, but Se7en does not hold up as well as any Chaplin film.

Agree 100%... I'm a Hitchcock nut, so I don't really mind seeing it top a list like that. It is a complex film that gets better on successive viewings (if you're into that sort of thing). But yeah, I'd put Psycho, Rope, Rear Window, North by Northwest, Rebecca and Notorious ahead of it, just off the top of my head. Probably others too.

Tastes change, critics change. The number of people asked also changed from about 100 to more than 600 from the last list to this one.

North by Northwest would be top of my list of best film of all time.

I have Vertigo and North By Northwest in VHS, which should give you some idea how long I have had them. And I watched Citizen Kane on cable about a month ago. I read somewhere that Citizen Kane was far ahead of its time technically in the use of light and focus. But I think the technical merits of films are lost on most people, myself included. I just want to be entertained.

                                What me worry?

I've met a person who actually had an inner ear problem and experienced vertigo all the time. He was miserable all the time and threw up a lot.
