I'm a new programmer, before learning to become a programmer I really liked playing online games, of course not all online games, I just like only games in which the character controls a fighter and fights against others, one of the games of that kind I like best is Space Cowboy. But I've realized that playing online games will make me lose concentration on work and study, that seems true at least to me, I've tried playing that game again and after playing I found difficult to concentrate on learning and working. I'm now really scared of that situation. I of course can't live without programming but playing online games is also very attractive to me. Could any programmers here share with me your experience? Can you both program and play online games in your life? Please give me some advice. Thank you all!

I play the occasional game (online or not). It all comes down to prioritizing. If there are more important things to do then don't launch the game. For instance I bought a apartment a couple years ago that needed a lot of work. In the period that I was doing the renovations (1.5 years or so) I almost never played any game. Now that I have some time again I play a few again. You have to make some time for fun, you can't stay concentrated 24hours a day and besides that's no way to live anyway, so playing a game from time to time (or doing anything else for fun) can't hurt (in my opinion). It does get frustrating from time to time tho when I see a obvious bug in the game, but that's just a side effect of our job I guess.

In my opinion the day consists of 3 thirds. 8 hours sleep 8 hours work 8 hours freetime It does not matter at all what you do for your free time as long as it's something you like. Be it online games, be it sports, be it going out with friends in a pub. The only important thing in life is that you are happy, cause you only got 1 life. So if you can find a job that's interesting for you (as is software design for me) and if you get a good mattress so that your sleep is nice as well then you should definately also get yourself a hobby that you find good. I'm also playing online games, and during time at university I played probably too much. But as soon as you get to real work, you will find the proper balance. Although I have to say that working as a programmer AND playing online games means you are more than 8 hours on the computer every workday.. that is kind of bad. Find some balance between computer games and other social activity :)

I do, but only in the evening, so work is not something that matters at that point. It's a nice way to wind the brain down at the end of the day. It's a good idea to have some leisure time activities that don't involve a computer, though, since we work with the things all day as well.

The only online game I play is the "random link" game:- 0. Go to this page[^] 1. With your eyes closed "scroll and click" to any listed drink. 2. Mix rinse and repeat.

Panic, Chaos, Destruction. My work here is done. Drink. Get drunk. Fall over - P O'H OK, I will win to day or my name isn't Ethel Crudacre! - DD Ethel Crudacre I cannot live by bread alone. Bacon and ketchup are needed as well. - Trollslayer Have a bit more patience with newbies. Of course some of them act dumb - they're often *students*, for heaven's sake - Terry Pratchett

You just juggle the books so that it looks like: 4 hours sleep 15 hours work 9 hours training Only an accountant can achieve that.

Never worked for me. The Amos compiler would be shutdown for Monkey Island, Visual Studio 2008 would be shutdown in favor of World of Warcraft. A fulltime dayjob programming, fulltime evenings a Mage. In a blue dress. Running around Stormwind for hours, to get one of those rare in-game pets. Forgot to cook sometimes, forgot the time often. Never forgot the cat though :) Stopped with the game two years ago; no television in the appartment, I'm swimming in spare time again :-D ..but I do still miss standing on the bridge[^] in Alterac Valley. Close to the graveyard, and sheer fun for any firemage.

That was like waiting for pr0n to load in the good bad old days of the internet. Picture appearing line by line, eagerly waiting to see if it will contain anything good. We have a great internet connection at work.

I'm sure you don't have the belly button to pull it off.

Yes, you can combine gaming and programming just fine. You may have some difficulty trying to add a social life to that, though, but neither gamers nor programmers are known for their exciting social lives. Tip: "My main is on Eredar" is not a pickup line.
