My friends call me a s***bag because I automate my work when I was hired to do it manually. Am I?

I think I would use the term "Intelligent and Efficient" I automate a lot of the donkey work stuff. It used to take 3 or 4 hours to do the VAT returns, I have them down to about 20 mins. (Of course I don't tell anybody at work that).

You should tell them about the new tools that can be used for automating repetitive tasks, freeing people up to do creative and clever things that require a brain. They're called "computers", I think.

Depends on what you do while the automation is, um... automating. If you sit around screwing around on C.P. I mean the internet, yep you're a sock bag. If you're thinking of other ways to make your and other peoples jobs more efficient while fulfilling your duties, then they're the shot bags.

Not at all. Any work you can safely automate is simply working smarter. I've plastered our suggestion board at work with postits about this exact topic. No more writing DB migration scripts by hand, automate it and turn a week's work into an hour's work. No more creating NHibernate mappings and Entity Models by hand, use a tool and turn 3 days' work into an hour's work. No more writing my own GUI components for web apps, buy a decent library and save weeks. To get any of this to make sense to my company I have to cost it out and bang away at it like a new puppy on someone's leg. The message gets through when it eventually reaches someone who has an insight into the finances of the company.

But what if I manage to do that and still screw around on CP? :-D

Common sense is not a gift it's a curse. Those of us who have it have to deal with those that don't.... Be careful which toes you step on today, they might be connected to the foot that kicks your butt tomorrow. You can't scare me, I have children.

Are they serious? If so perhaps you need some new friends. Or perhaps you need to educate them on professional conduct.
