So, this thread got me thinking: http://www.codeproject.com/Messages/4334679/Goodbye.aspx[^] For those on here with pseudonyms, why do you do it? Is it out of fear, just for fun, your real name was already taken by somebody? Do you do it so that you can bad mouth people without them knowing? Are you a celebrity and you just want to be a normal 'Joe'? Are you evading the law? Is it just a reflex and you don't care if somebody finds out who you are? Are you Batman? I'm just having a hard time thinking of a scenario where you would stop coming to this site after 4 years just because someone found your true identity.

All of the above :). I used to use a pseudonym on here but changed that really fast. Don't see the point in it, if you don't want to be associated with what you post on here than just don't post it. For gaming forums / sites I still use pseudonyms, don't know just seems more fun that way ;P

I've never felt the need to hide my real name.  Besides, I'm very easy to find[^] on the web although I often get confused with my namesake (a professor) who probably also gets mistaken for me.  Oddly enough, we're related! /ravi

I guess being anonymous makes it a little easier for some people to express religious and political stances. Also, not all companies would like to see their employees spending too much time on the forums here.

That was my take on it as well. That's partly why I don't use my real name and I spend less time here than CDP did.

What? Big Daddy Farang is not your real name? I don't know what is real anymore. I feel so lied to. :)

            Yes

            just for fun

            Not really

your real name was already taken by somebody?

Doubt it, but I never checked

Do you do it so that you can bad mouth people without them knowing?

            :-O

Are you a celebrity and you just want to be a normal 'Joe'?

You got me, I'm really Brad Pitt.

            Are you evading the law?

            No

Is it just a reflex and you don't care if somebody finds out who you are?

Partly, it is a reflex, but I'm not sure whether I care if somebody finds out who I am.

            Are you Batman?

Yes I did start using my real name on Stack Overflow however with the idea that it might be professional useful at some point. If I had the time and motivation to write really good articles on here, I would definitely use my real name, but as it stands, I rarely even look in the programming forums here anymore.

Evading the law? Yea good luck with that. They'll just force CP to hand over your IP address and your ISP to hand over your registration details. But why admit crimes on CP anyway? Or anywhere else, for that matter.

I have had an unexpected situation where someone from CodeProject contacted me over the phone. In the end, it was on the up and up. But still, I can see having a bit of distance from people as beneficial, if you would find that sort of thing disconcerting.

I used to have a pseudonym (digital man - I just liked it, okay?) but decided to use my real name as I really have nothing to hide and the other name just became a bit silly. I try not to say anything really horrible or offensive that could come back and haunt me: I won't change my opinions or approach in case I might offend an employer or workmate in the future - that's just silly and a bit cowardly, too. I don't understand why he chose to leave just because someone found out who he was. So what? Who the hell are you that it is that sensitive or important???

Just because people can see my real name, doesn't mean they know how to pronounce it. So I'm safe since I only respond well orally. :-D

I will never use my real name. Identity and online reputation will be really important in a decade, so I prefer to have the choice to conceal my identity, which is only possible with a pseudonym. You can never know what future looks like. Look at our chocolated friend on CP, she also had to hide her online name to escape some old story. Better be anonymous right away.

Why do you use your administrative name? Is it so you can Google your name to see how many results you get? Do you do it so that future employers can check out all the incredibly clever tings you post on the internet? Are you just pretending to be a real person? Are you hoping to meet new friends/spouces/businesspartners this way? Are you afraid that people will think you're weird or involved in illegal activities? Do you have an autism that makes it impossible for you to write something else than your own name whenever you see a field that is labeled with "name"? Are you a politician?

Just because people can see my real name, doesn't mean they know how to pronounce it. So I'm safe since I only respond well orally. :-D

I don't know if I could take people finding out who I really am... That's why I hide my real name over there, where nobody would think to look ---> Kidding aside, though... This is one of the only sites where I use my real name... I used to try to be completely anonymous online, but since I was always using the same handle, it became easier and easier to connect the handle to my true identity. So now I have a few other handles, with different degrees of connectivity to reality, but I still assume that anything I post online will, at some point, be connected to me.

Proud to have finally moved to the A-Ark. Which one are you in?

Same for me. I use my real name here on this site, but no where else.

                                          I wasn't, now I am, then I won't be anymore.
