Jetstar vs Virgin

Having decided to start using Virgin, I looked at both sites. Jetstar charges $17 to use a credit card, Virgin charges $7. The Jetstar site keeps reselecting insurance, you have to fight it to stop buying it. It tries to trick you in to paying an extra $5 per person each way to 'choose a seat' and in fact makes clear you will get a bad seat if you do not. The $17 'plus' fare no longer offers preboarding ( probably because they never did it to start with ). Sadly, Virgin costs a fair bit more, although it's no better, in my view. $138 for Jet* and $220 for Virgin on the first flight I need when I get back ( Jo Bonamassa in Oct ). That's if I pay by direct deposit, and don't pay the credit card surcharges.

Don't they talk total crap? In the different sections of the plane, all the seats are the same in that class so there's no concept of a bad seat. It proves though, that there are gullible people who think they may well indeed sit on a bag of cement and gravel if they don't take it. RyanAir use just about every scam known to the industry. Card transaction fees have been a source of irritation in the UK for years. Not so long ago, bank charges were challenged in the courts. The powerful lobby the banks can afford to run were able to help them escape publishing the true cost of their transaction fees. Wherever a card is involved there is an ingenious group poised to create more avenues of revenue collection. It also mirrors a similar case with CDW on rental cars. I take out a vacation policy for about £40 which covers my CDW and a stack of other rental options the companies want you to take. That almost halves my additional car insurance abroad. Yet, the rental firms always try to force theirs on you or conveniently "forget" to tick the box saying you don't want what they're offering. When they try to force their CDW on me I tell them, fine, I'll sign up, but if I take it, I'm going to use it. For some reason, they're happy to accept my CDW policy. :-D

Oftentimes it is seen that paying a little extra will gain you much more in terms of value added. I will always look at British Airways flights, and have noticed that although the quoted ticket price is higher, by the time you add on the extra/hidden charges of the 'cheaper' option it becomes more expensive. BA gives you more baggage, minimal CC Charge, no boarding charge, nicer staff, better airlines, airports that are actually in the city you want to go to, etc. You get what you pay for. But sometimes the extra is just so worth it.

I once asked why I couldn't smoke on a plane (I was very hungover and grumpy) and was told something about it annoying other passengers. I then asked how come children were allowed on then. Worst day's travel of my life that, I'd been drinking til half two in the morning (we'd won a bottle of vodka in the raffle and two of us had finished it between us), picked up by a colleague at half 4, driven to Gatwick for a flight to Paris. Got to Paris to discover flight to Verona cancelled. 7 hours later (during which time I'd sobered up and begun the hangover) got flight to Venice. Had coach journey from Venice to Verona. This was the Sunday after Italy moved to the Euro and there were massive queues at all the tolls on the roads. Got taxi from Verona airport to hotel. Got to hotel 15 hours after leaving home to discover the restaurant wasn't open on Sundays.

What I meant was, I'll get a middle seat, not comfy when you're tall. But yes, they do also try to onsell exit rows, etc.

I tend to fly QANTAS for that reason, it's only this experience that has me considering my loyalty
