Eid Mubārak
-
Our 4 Muslim colleagues have supplied the office with somasas, pakoras and spring rolls to invite us to join with them in celebrating Eid (last weekend I believe). The food is on the empty desk next to mine. There is lots of it. I am doing my best to remedy the situation. When it is either all gone or I can eat no more I shall go home to begin my fortnight's holiday. Happy Tuesday to one and all, whatever you may believe in, if the food is tasty enough then it's OK by me.
Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends. Shed Petition[^]

Eid Muburak as sported by Nasri.[^] Gave me a bit of a conundrum on Sunday, as, for a short while, the most punchable face in Football became the most Kissable face in Football.

We should have day off on other religions main festivals. One of my colleague is from India and he said they get off for Christmas, Easter, Eid, Diwali in India. I think they follow bit of similar concept in Australia too.
I believe that I should not have to take time off work at prescribed dates due to Bronze Age Levantine Peasants, Crypto-Communist Upstarts or Mediaeval Fascists. I should take the days off when I want them off. OK, I would take xmas off cos there is good telly and my mum would be upset if I didn't turn up for a feed, but other than that I would like the freedom to go on holiday at any time and not have to pay a surcharge for taking the child with me cos it was that time of the year they nailed a hippy to a tree. On the other hand I know a lot of people do believe in the pixies and that is why we get so many of these days, but are they really necessary? I want Midsummer's Day to be a holiday, and Trafalgar Day, what of May 4th... If we stood firm and demanded new inclusive holidays in exchange for the divisive religious ones we would all be happy! (Except the French, they would not like Trafalgar Day).

I don't know, what you are on about. I am not talking about your annual leave. You can take your annual leave whenever you want. But there should be a big festivals holidays like in India, majorities are hindu but still there is an holiday on Christmas and same with the Easter and Eid.

But are you comparing these days with Christmas? If not, then similarly, you can not compare them with Eid, Diwali, Easter etc...

Good luck with that..

I get 23 Days Annual Leave + 8 Bank/Public Holidays. I would rather have these 8 days at my discretion rather than based on some centuries old belief system.

No, xmas is a religious holiday. I would rather not take them as I would be implicitly supporting an out dated and divisive belief. Better that I take holidays that are not imposed by one section or another based on deity worship, or a wizard's decision.

We got May Day out of the buggers back in the 70's. Time for a few more.

Would you still complain if the free days were extra, instead of cutting into your stock of "get out of work free"-cards?
See Above. They are Free Days now, I just want the right to take them at my discretion. I get 31 paid days off a year, but 11 of them are compulsorily taken at set times, and I would rather not have this imposed upon me.

That's not the point. I think 23 days are enough for you to take holidays whenever you want. Rest comes as a bonus. You can't complain for that. The option is take it or leave it. Am sure you would grab it. How about 23days(whenever you like) + 8 bank/public holidays + 5 world religious holidays?

Ok, I am reluctantly disinclined to refuse to acquiesce to your magnanimous offer of a pentitudinal gallimaufry of leisure and gourmandism.

The point is, you'd get 18 days + 8 public holidays + 5 religious. Otherwise the productivity of the nation has been reduced by 5 days and that wouldn't fly. So you would end up sacrificing some of your take-whenever leave days for a few scattered days that are no use to anyone.

The 8 days are down to your employer not the state (or any religious body). Contrary to popular belief, there is no automatic right to time off on these days - it's just that convention has led employers to grant time off or extra pay on these days.
