The 8 days are down to your employer not the state (or any religious body). Contrary to popular belief, there is no automatic right to time off on these days - it's just that convention has led employers to grant time off or extra pay on these days.

I get them so they are mine. If they want them back they can cough up the readies.

The point is, you'd get 18 days + 8 public holidays + 5 religious. Otherwise the productivity of the nation has been reduced by 5 days and that wouldn't fly. So you would end up sacrificing some of your take-whenever leave days for a few scattered days that are no use to anyone.

Our 4 Muslim colleagues have supplied the office with somasas, pakoras and spring rolls to invite us to join with them in celebrating Eid (last weekend I believe). The food is on the empty desk next to mine. There is lots of it. I am doing my best to remedy the situation. When it is either all gone or I can eat no more I shall go home to begin my fortnight's holiday. Happy Tuesday to one and all, whatever you may believe in, if the food is tasty enough then it's OK by me.

Soon there is a law coming out that - all the companies in/around Luton can not offer bank holidays to their employees. They got to work all the bank holidays with no extra pay. Watch out for the news early september. #NewsLeak

I believe that I should not have to take time off work at prescribed dates due to Bronze Age Levantine Peasants, Crypto-Communist Upstarts or Mediaeval Fascists. I should take the days off when I want them off. OK, I would take xmas off cos there is good telly and my mum would be upset if I didn't turn up for a feed, but other than that I would like the freedom to go on holiday at any time and not have to pay a surcharge for taking the child with me cos it was that time of the year they nailed a hippy to a tree. On the other hand I know a lot of people do believe in the pixies and that is why we get so many of these days, but are they really necessary? I want Midsummer's Day to be a holiday, and Trafalgar Day, what of May 4th... If we stood firm and demanded new inclusive holidays in exchange for the divisive religious ones we would all be happy! (Except the French, they would not like Trafalgar Day).

No, xmas is a religious holiday. I would rather not take them as I would be implicitly supporting an out dated and divisive belief. Better that I take holidays that are not imposed by one section or another based on deity worship, or a wizard's decision.

While this sounds like a good and simple idea, it might be complicated to implement it. Would these days be "normal" leave days, e.g. can your employer also prevent you from taking then whenever you want, but force you to take them when he wants ? Bank holidays have two advantages : everybody takes them at the same time, making the annoyance of everything closed balanced with the fact that everybody's annoyed at the same time, (and available at the same time, making party organisation easier), and employers have no choice but let you leave. This is not the case with annual leave days.

I think there should be staggered weekends. People with children should get different weekends to those without. Stop the childless getting annoyed by kids everywhere on their days off.

See Above. They are Free Days now, I just want the right to take them at my discretion. I get 31 paid days off a year, but 11 of them are compulsorily taken at set times, and I would rather not have this imposed upon me.

But as this has arisen from Dave complaining about Bank Holidays here in the UK, the UK rules are the ones we have to consider.

A loss of less than 2% of the working-days.. I would be surprised if that had actual consequences. An unusually big flu epidemic would kill more days. Looking at a nice table of average working hours per week by country actually gives me the impression that working less is good for the economy, strange as it may sound.

No, I am an Atheist who is fed up having to Kow Tow to the requirements of people who do not share my world view. A prejudiced pig is someone who expects me to take time off because of some religious observance that they have been brainwashed and abused as a child into believing, regardless of the sensibilities of others.
