So I am watching the Para Olympics by chance the other day and I see show jumping. Horses. Jumping. Carrying people around on their backs. Just how is this a Para Olympic sport? The horses arent missing limbs are they? Look, having a rider who is partially sighted, missing part of a limb or some such isnt going to make any difference to the ability of a completely sound and fit horse to jump over some logs! And before you say they can't hang on I an sure given the prothetics available today special ones can be made that do a better job than a stirrup! I had a similar thought a few years ago watching the Para Olympics 800m hurdles for those with a learing disability. A learning disability? ust how does that make them run any different to someone in the true Olymppics? A bit thick they might be but it doesnt stop them running! If they wanted to make it fair they should have people asking them quesitons at each hurdle. Things like 'pi to 3 decimal places' or 'whats that on your vest', you know, things to test their ability to focus and think under stress. Anyway, I find the Para Olympics a bit odd at times. --edit-- Dont forget to look at the message icon. :)

There are plenty of other channels. I don't see the point in lots of programmes so I don't watch them.

Yes I agree that I can watch something else, and I do, but that doesn't change the fact that it IS televised and thus providing it with more prominence than it deserves. The front-page of The Times a couple of days ago was denouncing America for not showing the Games live, why should they? And what's it got to do with a British newspaper if they don't?

But you are obligated to not watch something else on Channel 4 for, what was it, 400 hours? Not that it matters a bit to me personally, just pointing out that the argument may be a little redundant. We can all agree that having a full coverage of this extremely long event is a little weird.

There is more than enough space for full coverage. Full coverage, not that it is, would be a very good thing I haven't watched any of it.

I'm sorry mate, but I have to disagree with you here. Why should we not afford the same dignity as we do to a fully-abled person in the Olympics? These competitors have as much right to have their skill displayed as someone like Michael Phelps does.

My point is there's also a lot of stuff that other people would want to watch on television that they never gets covered. For instance there are over 200 million chess players world wide; you could expect that if there's a big tournament, it would get at least half an hour coverage; but that doesn't even happen, let alone being fully broadcasted. I agree that it's not really important and it certainly isn't anyone's business what a commercial television station does. I don't even own a television, so I certainly don't care. You can rationalize that all you want, but that doesn't change the fact that most people would not agree with the disproportionate media attention the paralympics get.

Channel 4 have taken a commercial decision to provide coverage of the Paralympics, the TV ratings so far seem to suggest it was a good decision.

Channel 4 is to show more of the games after it has been a massive ratings win so far. The opening ceremony gave them their biggest audience for a decade, and some of the coverage of the events have made them the most watched channel in the country. Of course that doesn't make your claim for most people any less true, but even if it is the coverage is no less valid. Most people are miserable, selfish bastards and I don't care what they think.

BTW, What is this Para Olympics of which you speak. I have heard nothing of this strange thing. Perhaps you mean Paralympics, for that is what everyone else in the world except for those with learning difficulties, call it.

It's not something I like to watch. I love the Olympics. And the winner of the 100M can say he is the fastest man over that distance in the World or the winner of the 200m breaststroke is the fastest swimmer at that distance in the world. I do not see the point in having a competition two weeks later to determine who is the fastest person with a learning disability. Or who is the fastest swimmer with one leg, or which hayfever sufferer can jump the furthest. I don't think it should be given any significance, and in the rest of the world it quite rightly isn't.

I do not see the point in televising groups of men playing with balls, whether with or without sticks, or in televising people running/cycling/swimming/jumping around, in circles or otherwise. My solution: I watch what I want to watch, and don't carp about what I don't.

That somehow ended up on the wrong side of the sig line.
