Well the ones I saw looked pretty damn normal to me. It wasnt like they were herded out of a van whereupon they wandered around aimlessly having to be constantly shepherded to the start line. And as for the IQ required to run and jump for a normal Olympian, I wouldn't have thought it was that high, so I really fail so see why there is any distinction here. As for the horses though, I really do think they should be disable too. A few lame ones with replacement legs and stuff. Perhaps those blade looking things the runners use. With a bit of technology they could be got to jump 30 feet I reckon. :)

That would certainly make it more interesting.

No it's not. I read a piece that suggests that 1 in 6 cheat by hurting themselves before a competition. Apparently by hurting themselves this produces a shot of adrenalin which speeds up their heart and gets them warmed-up in much the same way as an abled-bodied person would warm-up through exercise.

He should leave his culture of misogyny at home. It's a shame the IPC and the Duchess of York decided his bigotry is something which should be respected.

I agree. It is a cultural thing, so when abroad he shouldnt worry about shaking a womans hand.

Unfortunately cultural relativism which infests the west means his culture of bigotry is pandered to. The IPC should have told him if he didn't want to shake the hand of a woman he doesn't consider as his property he shouldn't have been on the podium

Actually, you didn't, and nor does anyone else who gets the quote wrong. "The staff of life" = a famous quote from one of the translations of the Bible, which everyone knows and understands, and which can be use directly, indirectly, symbolically, rhetorically, metaphorically, etc. in discussions with intelligent and lucid people. "The stuff of life" = a vague descriptive used in biological circles, which can only be used directly, so is usually a nonsense misquoting of "the staff of life",

It was a proposed, conceptual petition, so please enclose your proposed, conceptual signature in a plain, unmarked, mud-coloured envelope.

I wasn't quoting, I was literally saying 'the stuff of life', I could have said the 'meat and drink' or some other thing. Why should you assume that because I write something that is a quote of someone else's?

BTW, What is this Para Olympics of which you speak. I have heard nothing of this strange thing. Perhaps you mean Paralympics, for that is what everyone else in the world except for those with learning difficulties, call it.

You must be pretty hard of hearing then since it is most commonly refered to this way on the TV. So I am watching the Para Olympics by chance the other day and I see show jumping. Horses. Jumping. Carrying people around on their backs. Just how is this a Para Olympic sport? The horses arent missing limbs are they? Look, having a rider who is partially sighted, missing part of a limb or some such isnt going to make any difference to the ability of a completely sound and fit horse to jump over some logs! And before you say they can't hang on I an sure given the prothetics available today special ones can be made that do a better job than a stirrup! I had a similar thought a few years ago watching the Para Olympics 800m hurdles for those with a learing disability. A learning disability? ust how does that make them run any different to someone in the true Olymppics? A bit thick they might be but it doesnt stop them running! If they wanted to make it fair they should have people asking them quesitons at each hurdle. Things like 'pi to 3 decimal places' or 'whats that on your vest', you know, things to test their ability to focus and think under stress. Anyway, I find the Para Olympics a bit odd at times. --edit-- Dont forget to look at the message icon. :)

I agree on the 800m you saw. Mental/cognitive disabilities should be kept separate from physical ones. The PO should be for physical, the Special Olympics for mental.
