Are you on the cutting edge of technology?

I'm not. My family and work, contribute to me not being able to fully immerse myself into today's cutting edge software, designs, and practices. I just don't have the time. If I made the time, then my family and work would suffer; something would have to give. My work and my skill set, is about 3 years behind today's technology in regards to what I stated above. I envy my fellow members here, that have the time, at work and at home, to be one with the force. I love reading the articles here that members such as them provide. I have currently started to sacrifice sleep, so that I can get back on track. My question...are you on the cutting edge of technology?

I was on the bleeding edge of Microsoft, but we have given that up as a mugs game given the speed at which Microsoft shifts direction now.

I lost track about five years ago, when I switched from development to the dark side of the force ( read process and methods development). And since I did not use .Net before ( I worked in the automotive embedded world), I've even missed the C# train. So I am a dinosaur ( MFC ? VC6.0 ?), actually a so old one that some Microsoft technologies which I have never learned are already extinct. There is no way I could catch up anymore, as this would be too much effort, and as for you, too much sacrifice. I truly admire the people here who managed to make the switch and follow the technology trend. :thumbsup:

My experience teaches me that "following" the trend is more related to the work you do. A while back I did .Net 2.0 for years and missed the 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 releases. Then I changed jobs and within a few weeks I had a total grasp on the .Net framework 4.0. Changed jobs again and went to the java world. I left it years ago (uni) at version 1.2. Now I'm working with 1.7 and it took me just a few weeks to get the hang of it again.

No, and I don't really care about whatever fleeting new thing is the cutting edge right now. I have no intention of learning something only to have it "go silverlight" a year or two later. I use my spare time to learn more about discrete math, algorithms and data structures. Might come in handy one day..

No. I'm up to date on .Net 4.0 and Java 1.6 (we're using 1.7 now but I don't know what new features, if any, that includes). And ASP.net MVC. Anything in the last couple of years I have missed out on – for now, until I'm put onto a project that uses them.

I'm not i'm still in good old C and it's pretty straight down there at that level not much changes. People and process do but not much else.

It depends on what you do with the tools you have available. You can do cutting edge applications with older tools. An analogy could be like a person playing guitar. Buying a $2000 guitar does not make a person a better guitar player, but a good guitar player can make a $100 guitar sound great. Like the old saying: “It's Not What You Have…It's What You Do With It.” No, I'm not on the cutting edge, tool wise, but I am doing some cool, really cool stuff with what I have. :cool:

Which is probably an appropriate interval for things that are actually worth anything to prove themselves versue stuff that is entirely worthless but everyone is sure will be the next greatest thing. Although five years might even be better. Then people will actually have some idea how to effectively use something and will have written something about doing just that. Versus someone writing three versions of an app using the same technology until they get to the point where they figure out how it should have been done.

I have been working front end WPF, and on that probably pretty close to being on the cutting edge, which is pretty dull now (not much has changed unfortunately). Started working with LINQ only about 2 years ago, and still learning. Finally started using the TPL. Was doing all this stuff with BackgroundWorker, and find out I had been working way too hard. Always seem to be learning something new, even in WPF.

You are not up to date. the new verion of .NET is 4.5.
