Maybe its just a fixation I have with news events, but sometimes I find myself wondering (perhaps even anticipating) the next big tragedy or sensational news story. I wonder, "what's gonna happen next?" Once it happens, I find myself saddened (in the case of a tragedy like the shuttle :(( ) but I still need that 24/7 NEWS. I swear it's like a drug sometimes. I guess everyone stops to see an accident along the road or to "rubber-neck" at something strange. Maybe its just human nature to be this way. X| Does anyone else feel this way? :~ I think I need to go find a rock and hide under it for a while just to get away from 24/7 NEWS. Lately, its been making me very emotional and jumpy what with war, terrorism, and democrats and europeans hating Bush (seriously I get mad at the TV). I pray that the Lord will give me peace.

I remember one incident from a few years back, when I saw an accident after it had happened. I was walking down the road, when one guy, in his eagerness to get down the bus (in India we have most of the buses where the gate can be opened even while the bus is moving), was leaning out as the bus neared the stop. There was however, another bus which the passenger didn't notice as his bus tried to overtake it at high speed. <> :( His whole face was crushed, and was bleeding so hard, I had to sit down right there when I saw him. And there were a couple of guys who snatched his wallet, his office bag, watch, etc and made away with it. The guy died on the spot and though I left later, the police must have found it difficult to find out who he was and to inform his family/friends of the tragedy in the absence of any identifying material. Such is human nature. :( Trying to know "what happened over there" is not bad IMO. It makes us feel a part of a larger community, a bond between those suffering and ourselves. Compassion for those hurt. Need to know more. Just like we share others' happiness (you do get glued to the TV when your favorite team wins a match, don't you?), we need to come together in moments of sorrow. I'd be worried the day when I'll be able to walk away non chalantly from an accident site without trying to see what happened.

I just worry that I'm anticipating the next disaster just so I can get my news fix. I don't want to be like that.

We're all overloaded with information, and it isn't healthy to get too fixated on maintaining a constant flow of it. I read a paper regularly, but it's a small town, and little ever happens. Mostly I skim it to see who I know that's in jail this week, or dead. I used to start every day with the news on TV, then read two or three national papers each day (and do the crosswords). Not anymore; I didn't hear about the shuttle until a friend I was chatting with mentioned it in the afternoon. Get away from it! Most of it is repetitive anyway, and you can catch up with anything important in five minutes on CNN once a week.:-D Nobody wants to read a diary by someone who has not seen the shadow of Bubba on the prison shower wall in front of them!

After thinking about your question for a while I have to say just human nature and that we have made good strides. Maybe Picards Star Trek ideals are obtainable. Just look back into history. In the late 1800's public hangings where family picnics and they often sold postcards of those shot. How many people turned up at executions during France's revolution. How many freaks found employment in circuses well into the 1900's. "I will find a new sig someday."
