The only real way to do this, is to change you identity, passport, etc. :)

Tell us Norm, how many accounts have you closed with them? Do you even know who you are anymore? :)

has anybody managed to actually do this??? i got an email from microsoft about their new terms of use and decided i wanted to cancel my stuff with them since i never use it anyways but i have spent the last 40mins trying and getting absolutely nowhere - apparently i have an xbox live account that i cannot cancel even though i have never owned or actually physically touched an xbox, either live or dead does anybody know what animal(s) i need to sacrifice to cancel my account with the big M ? i am going there in a week or 2 so maybe i'll just go ex-postal on them and see if that helps SO frustrating

Just violate their terms of use. That'll cancel your account.

Most accounts, you can't cancel. Some accounts, go inactive, if you haven't used them in 60 days, Hotmail for example. Microsoft sucks, and they get worse every day. I'm not just saying that because everyone else says it...they really do.

So they've made it work exactly the same as their help system? Look, one of the main things a company should present to its customers is consistency, so stop complaining.

Yeah, I'd keep those threats unspecific.

Get an XBox 360 (or borrow one), log on to your account, go into an online game that supports the microphone, and just scream obscenities until your account is banned...wait never mind, if they did that there wouldn't be any gamers left on Xbox live...

It's entirely possible they can't remove you. Or, more accurately, don't know how. I was told this first-hand by someone with direct access to the database used by one team back in the aughts. They had not built an account management feature into their web app. If a member record needed to be edited or removed, someone had to do it by hand in the back-end database. So, I guess they knew how, but it was made clear that nobody intended to actually mess with the database. If someone made a mistake or wanted to change contact info? Create a new account. As far as I know they still have the same database backing the same program. Whether they ever updated the front-end tools... well, clearly not effectively.

Why is it so important that you cancel it? Storing child porn on SkyDrive or something? :P Just let it lapse and forget about it - best case, they push out a ToS change and since you never agreed to it, it's inactivated, worse case, Microsoft gets bought out by NigeriSpamCo when the value of the dollar collapses! :P
