I am so sick of spam, and this morning I got one that started busily loading a HUGE image when I clicked on it, and contained the text 'my dads c**k was so big, I could feel it at the end of my pu**y'. Who the HELL wants to read that ? I feel sick ( and now you do too, sorry about that ) just thinking about it, and wondering what sort of sicko has their day made by having this stuff invade their inbox. I am all for freedom of speech, I abhor the idea that the Internet become a censored world. Why should it ? I don't care what Pete Townsend likes to look at, I just don't go there and it does not affect me. But it seems to me that this invasion of my personal space is what WILL result in attempts to censor/control the web. My kids will have email addresses one day. I don't want to tell them about every last perversion on the earth before then, so they don't learn about it when they check their mail. ( In effect, I suspect I'll run a filter and they will recieve mails only from known sources, the rest I will scan first ). Christian No offense, but I don't really want to encourage the creation of another VB developer. - Larry Antram 22 Oct 2002

I suspect someone thought 'unbelieveable' meant 'where do I get more'. It's a word that could be taken both ways, and someone who does not know Chris has made the wrong assumption. I don't think it was abuse this time, I think someone thought that 'unbelievable' meant 'really great'. But I agree - the rating system has become a waste of time. It should be for gold, or maybe silver only, to limit abuse. Even then it will happen. How about Platinum only...... ? The subject matter is disgusting, and the inference that anyone would be interested in it is deeply disturbing. So I can see why you'd be upset. But your first sentence was a statement of fact about the email you received, and your second was 'it's unbelievable'. That word can be taken two ways, and while I'd think that most people would get your meaning, it's ambiguous enough that on first scan, someone who has no idea who you are would be, IMO, forgiven for making the wrong assumption. Christian No offense, but I don't really want to encourage the creation of another VB developer. - Larry Antram 22 Oct 2002

anyone who would assume i like kiddie porn is making a huge assumption (regardless of the morality of it). it's placing me in a category that probably less than 0.001% of the world's population falls into. it's an insane assumption to make. one might as well assume that i find it "unbelievable" that i get an email with a picture in it, or that i got email at all. i stand by my statement; voting power should only be given to those who can demonstrate reading comprehension. -c

I know what you mean, everybody in my house gets some kind of weird, disgusting porn spam everyday. The sickest one that I've gotten is women doing it with farm animals. Why would anybody want to look at that crap. I worry about all the elementary school children that have email addresses and what they might be getting in their inbox. Gosh, wasn't I worked up ? Obviously, if Pete Townsend looks at kiddie porn, I *DO* care, and hope he dies in prison, sharing a cell with a big man named Bubba who has kids. I was obviously too upset to be lucid. The site that was spammed to me was not kiddie porn, it was old guys with young girls, claiming to be father and daugher. That is sick enough, but at least all concerned were consenting adults, although it is still disgusting, and likely to lead to some scumbag raping his kid. I hope they all die horribly. Some technological means to stop anonymous email would be welcome IMO. But censorship is not, because where does it end ? Your values ? Mine ? The Popes ? George Bushes ? It's an interesting discussion topic, censorship, and I'm not entirely sure where I personally would draw the line. I resent the concept of some government, Big Brother, Mary Whitehouse, or whoever telling me what I should and shouldn't see, as an adult. However, I wouldn't want dubious pornographic images to be, say, posted on a billboard outside a school. The laws that govern such stuff in the UK are in the business of censorship. So whilst in principle I oppose it, there are circumstances where I can approve of it. It's the drawing of the line that's the grey area, for me. My line may be a darn site more liberal than some, but I guess I may seem ultra conservative to others. Does this mean, though, that the line should not be drawn at all?? Aside from censorship, people are actually prosecuted for distributing or merely owning "obscene publications". Our laws in the UK have changed a fair bit in the days since Lady Chatterley's Lover was deemed as risky stuff that the public needed shielding from. There was a case more recently whereby a University library had some books confiscated that were deemed obscene, which I personally found worrying. Debbie

I suspect someone thought 'unbelieveable' meant 'where do I get more'. It's a word that could be taken both ways, and someone who does not know Chris has made the wrong assumption. I don't believe anyone subscribing to CP would be that stupid. It's more likely someone voted 1 as an indication of their opinion of the subject matter rather than the quality of the post. Now that's a more believable interpretation than the one you offered don't you think? :) "The folly of man is that he dreams of what he can never achieve rather than dream of what he can."

Another way would be to have a setting in your email client that either stops all html content messages, from people you don't knw maybe (more complicated filter that!) or maybe a switch to display html content as text and not act upon it. It should be fairly obvious what sort of site you were displaying by the urls... Debbie

I can't believe I'm still discussing this..... I presume the post above yours, which says 'people are unbelievable' is an indication that someone got how that word can be taken a number of ways. If you don't get that, then you'll have to take my word for it, this is too stupid a thing to argue about, and I'm having a bad enough night as it is. i got one yesterday that had the subject "You need kiddie porn!". the body of the message had a large picture of a naked girl standing there with all of her stuff on-display. she didn't look older than 13. it's unbelievable. -c

I hope you reported that? It's not worth checking out yourself first (in more ways that one), just send it on over to your local FBI office or whatever system you guys have in place for investigating these sorts of things. :~
