Given that you have not learned how to use Google yet, I would say quite a long time.

One of these days I'm going to think of a really clever signature.

Very smart reply right? I'd give you an appropriate answer but I won't as I am on a public forum, so I will restrain myself from this - and don't tell you what you actually deserve. As for the question, Google would not help here - because I was looking for an expert advice; meaning, there maybe lots of books on the internet, but I was asking for your (or the audiences more precisely; your answer I have already received and it was quite unhelpful) as to which book is "nice"/good.

    best regards.

Hi people, Can anyone please tell me what is the best and fastest way to learn PHP? I am referring to if someone has a link to some nice tutorial or a nice book which is available online. Thanks!. ps. How long do you think it could take to learn it?

      best regards.

I was the dumbest student in my school and university. Yet I learned PHP in 2 hours exact (it was a story to tell). But I mastered in PHP in one years(after I joined a company). Now you are looking for an expert advised and you started with mocking one of the most experts here. The fact is if you don't know how to help yourself and try to understand experts opinion then you would never learn. And final thing is getting a graduation certificate make you a graduate but not educated.

I wish I could believe there is an after life.

Not really, but it is based on the reasonable assumption that you did not bother to read the posting guidelines[^], nor did you bother to do some basic research into the learning tools that can easily be found by doing this[^]. In your original question you asked:

        Stephan A. wrote:

OK, the answer is simple do what I suggested, and start studying.

        Stephan A. wrote:

        Same answer, Google finds lots.

        Stephan A. wrote:

How can anyone give a valid answer to such a question? You may be a very fast learner or the dumbest person on the planet; there is no way that we could judge.

Well that's my point. There maybe lots of books on the internet and tutorials, but I was not willing to spend my time on reading a mediocre one. Rather as I said I wanted to be directed to a good book on this subject - and that is basically what I asked for. As for the comments of the second person named Andrei: no comments.

It was not my intention to engage in some heated debates, just I get surprised sometimes how people can "insult" you or deduce things like whether you know how to use google or not etc. Thanks for the book anyway, but I think I won't be concentrating on PHP anymore. changed my plans. if i need it i know now where to start from.

 While my comments may be seen as inflammatory, they were also half-joking. I have responded to a post I have seen as improperly written, and to your second post as inflammatory to a member directing you to read the FAQs. We care a lot about that, and we don't like people coming in to ask without doing their own homework first, or showing what they've tried and where they've failed. Had you stated what you did in your second post, I would've actually given you a 5. I am giving one to you now for explaining better what you actually wanted. You are also a new user to this site. I recommend you take a look in Q&A so as to understand what members here are dealing with every day, and maybe cut them some slack as well (and by this I mean Richard, not me, as am I am also a relatively new member). As to your last question,

the answer is - it varies. If you do master some programming basics, it won't take you very long to master a mid-level understanding of it, PHP is not that hard. All it takes is the willingness and motivation to do it.

I doubt the Google suggestion was intended as an insult. That said, there are huge resources available for any discipline, not just computing with PHP, alas, there are plenty individuals who just can't be bothered to do their own research. This is confirmed if you look at most programmer forums here and elsewhere. Like I said, I don't think our colleagues reference to Google was intent on offending you, and neither is this posting.

And how do you define "good"? You can ask this question of a lots of people and get lots of answers, many of which will be wrong for you because they are either too basic or too advanced. You really need to do your own initial research when trying to learn a new subject, rather than expecting others to do it for you.

ok. let's skip it it is not worth it anymore, I am not going to continue it anymore. I'm not sure what you meant with that "words fail me", in any case, I had asked a simple question and wanted a simple answer. Maybe I had to better formulate that I was actually looking for a good book (of course there exists notion of good book, i.e., one that is popular and well received in the community - I think I didn't say anything new here). What I meant more particularly with good book, could be a book that is: easily comprehensible, covers sufficiently many details etc. anyway.....

I mean, why have you been making all this fuss when you had no intention of learning PHP in the first place?

This guy cannot even spend a minute to check for lots of stuff that would be helpful. Next, he will ask for a good site to get a project!

Very interesting, but if you had read the entire thread you would see that the OP lost interest a week ago.
