This is an unusual (and terrible) incident. Generally speaking the police don't need guns because the vast majority (over 99% probably) of the people neither have access to or want a gun. Even if these poor girls had been carrying it looks like it was a trap and they may still have been killed. I also know that most police in the UK don't want to carry guns since they feel that will encourage criminals to use them, so heightening the risk. Yes, some criminals do and have always carried but most don't. What's stupid is making a stupid remark with little or no knowledge and making it sound like you're crowing over their deaths because it makes your point. Shame on you.

I am ex-military and have used weapons, and believe me I would not want our police carrying them. In fact gun crime here is so rare as to be abnormal.

IMHO the police and the military should not be allowed to carry a weapon that a civilian is not allowed to carry.

Considering he had a grenade, also illegal in US, it wasn't a fair fight. I think the only failure here is the justice system that let him walk while under suspicion of murder.
