It depends on how you look at it. If we consider a "lady" or "gentleman" to be someone who fits into society's narrow view of what they should be, then let the concept die naturally. :) If on the other hand, we consider it as a way of treating people, then the opposite. :-D Having said, that, "ladies" and "gentlemen" leaves people who sit directly astride the gender divide out in the cold...and there's more of them around than there are people like me....it's just that they're hiding. Something else to ponder I guess. Anna :rose: www.annasplace.me.uk

Oh god no, stop it with all those laughs! As a newly initiated Trillian user I just had a side-splitting encounter with Paul and his LMAO's. It's the first time I've had shots of neat vodka before evening hours just to settle me down since I left college. All this farking has me with wild images of Paul (still, oddly, black and white) on all fours running round on the floor between my legs like a cat does when it wants food wildly throwing his head into the air and farking like there's no tomorrow. Fark fark FARK! Fark! Fark fark! FARK FARK FARK! Argghhhhh!! Please please stop it! This is starting to head down a road I'd rather not tread on! :omg:  :-O

A lady or a gentleman is gender neutral. It is the way one acts that defines oneself as a lady or gentleman. A guy can act like a lady and a woman like a gentleman.

Fair enough. What I was alluding to is that there are many people out there for which "male" or "female" just doesn't fit (e.g. the intersexed Aussie recently awarded a legal gender of "X"), and they're rather left out! Anna :rose: www.annasplace.me.uk

Ahh ok. Well this is pretty serious stuff. I don't think gender categorisation will go away for thousands of years and it will still be based on physical appearance. A third or more gender won't be introduced beyond official forms, pop-culture just won't accept it so easily. So much is based on ticking wether you are a female or male that it is hard to change even if we wanted to. What about public bathrooms and changing areas? What about when you go to the chemist and you need a gender specific drug, I will bet there will be some cock ups there if it becomes too common to not ask or deduce the sex of the person. A male born and physically male person who has "transgendered" to being a female could be mistaken for a female and given a drug which is no good for them. There is just so much. It must be tough and I am open to transgendered people but frankly I can't go walking on eggshells everytime gender comes up. If I did that then I would have to do the same for different races and religions, food preferences and all sorts of PC stuff. Spend more time thinking "oooh, can I say that? Won't someone get offended if I say 'All males this side, females this side' instead of 'Males here, females here, others here, not-sures here and want-to-bes here'" than actually saying or doing anything. People like you will just have to be a bit toughed skinned about the issue and realise we aren't meaning to be offensive.

It is difficult and sadly there's no easy answers. Our whole culture is founded on male|female lines and anyone who doesn't fit that is going to be a bit left out. One thing I have noticed is that although most people seem to be able to accept those like myself who're TS, they have difficulty with someone who doesn't identifiably belong to one or the other of the established genders (pre-ops who never have surgery are a case in point). If our language isn't even adequate for the task, how can society in its current form be? Tricky... I think the only way forward is to let people decide for themselves. Ultimately, each of us is the only true judge of who we are. No form or label can describe any of us adequately. I suffered a great deal in my childhood by being forced to participate in stereotypically "male" sports etc., and I still carry the scars. That certainly colours my view of things now.
