Yea, it would be a great feature. And we don't want chris to get bored, having nothing to do ;P - Anders Money talks, but all mine ever says is "Goodbye!"

I've seen a couple freely-available chat room setups written in Java. Would this be blasphemy for us? ;) -- Russell Morris Georgia Institute of Technology "Lisa, just because I don't care doesn't mean I'm not listening..." - Homer

Blah - Java would slow these pages WAY down. :| My suggestion is to exchange ICQ #'s if you want to chat (or MSN, or Yahoo! Messenger, etc...) Jon Sagara "Go Banana!" -- Ralph Wiggum

For the sake of Chris's sanity ;) I'd rather use existing public chats, like MSN's communities. We could create a CP community, or maybe several depending on popularity, and use MSN's chat capability. --Mike-- http://home.inreach.com/mdunn/ Sometimes, arming yourself with a big pointy stake just won't do you any good.

Or as a group project we could throw all of our knowledge together and make our own messenger program. This is a programming site after all. -Matt Newman -- Where there is a will there is a way but if there is no will, well then your just screwed.

I suggest IRC. Its free and only takes a few minutes to set up.

Not to be a kill-joy here but I think this is misdirected idea (yes, being diplomatic here ;)). A couple of things that forums have over chat-rooms:* Forums structure the query-response format in a logical easy to use manner

                  • Messages are stored for prosperity for the good of all mankind
                  • Forums allow for people in different time zones to interact
                  • People do less rambling and cut to the chase quicker
                  • And last but not least if I ever have to download (on my South African connection) another Java applet or have to hit refresh to see the next guys comment in a chat-room I will take Bob (the alien) and go on a killing spree, it will be messy
Over all I think we should leave chat-rooms to IRC or use ICQ, MSN (not that I like MSN mind you) and other instant messengers. regards, Paul Watson Cape Town, South Africa e: paulmwatson@email.com w: vergen.org

How about a closed IRC system? I don't like/use instant message programs. Is there any such thing as an IRC server that can require a password to join? I haven't been on IRC for a while since all of the cable modem ISP's seem to be banned from access.

Hmm... There has to be a way to tap into MSN Messenger for this. I know it provides chat rooms, and I would be that MS has some kind of programmability model for this in Hailstorm.
