Would you sit next to a foreigner in a bus or train? I look similar to Nish's profile pic, and most of the time, the place next to me is the last to be filled on public transport. I really shouldn't give a sh*t, but I've realized that I no longer sit, even if the entire f***ing carriage is vacant. Stupid Chinese / Vietnamese / Brits / French / etc (real country disguised)

Even if its alien, I don't care. (no wait... I will give priority to good looking girls, otherwise)

Which part of the world you are in? I have spend 5 years in US and I never faced any racism, not even once, not even slightest. (and I cannot guaranty any American/Foreigner about this kind of friendly behavior in India, I know... strange right!). Sometimes it's our mindset, just look around you, is this happening to every dark skinned person in the public transport? .....I dont think so... :)

Not if I can help it. I also prefer not to sit next to: fat people, unwashed people, junkies, and people in general. The relative weights of these preferences are not entirely clear even to myself.

Yeah, smelly foreigners. In all seriousness it doesn't bother me at all, but a couple of years ago I was on a train, and sitting opposite a black man who had a rucksack next to him. As we pulled into a station he stood up and walked off down the train, leaving his rucksack on the seat. I was a little bit concerned that the rucksack was going to explode, but not too much. I stood up, I had a look out the door to see if he had got off further down the train, and I returned to my seat (listening for ticking sounds) before we pulled off from the station. The man returned shortly afterwards. I don't know if I would have been less worried had he been white, or more worried had he been Asian. Ultimately what kept me calm was wondering why anyone would want to blow up Tamworth, I mean there are many good reasons, but I cannot think that any self respecting terrorist would go to the bother.

So the fact you know who Nish is implies you are a regular, But you have only signed up today. Have you really created a sock-puppet just to post this? I wouldn't sit next to somebody who was taking to much of an interest in where people choose to sit.

Consider the following... 9/11 (not having this argument again). 7/7 London 21/7 London Bali Bombings Shoe Bomber The Srinagar Bombing US Consulate Bombing in Karachi The Haifa Bus Massacre Riyadh Compound Bombings Gateway of India (Mumbai) Bombings The Glasgow Airport Attack As you see from this VERY TINY SELECTION there have been a lot of islamic terror attacks. Therefore anyone who looks even vaguely like they may be islamic is going to be viewed with suspicion. Mind you, if you do get on a train and cannot find a seat, simply pull out a prayer mat, a koran and start wailing allah akbar and you will have a whole carriage to yourself.

The thing I find most peculiar about the entire story is that you thought it was a bomb because he was a black man. In America this wouldn't be the case. Funny how that works.
If it moves, compile it
I didn't think it was a bomb because he was a black man, I was suspicious because he left as we pulled into a station. Had it been an Asian man then I would probably have been more concerned. Such was the media perception in the UK at the time. There have been quite a few black would be bombers in recent times, and a few white ones too.

Also, our day to day attitudes in the US are different from what I gathered. Even more so in big cities. So, in a place like the public transport, they don't like anyone. Also, most people don't like people "bird doggin" them. If you want to take something as racist/personal we'll give you plenty of opportunities. However, from my experience, it's not usually meant that way. Do keep in mind that there are racist sunshines everywhere. I'm not talking about them, I'm talking about people in general.

Maybe not in the US, since there are people from practically every country in the world. Around here, everyone looks the same.

I'm canadian, I take the train to work every day, and I sit next to foreigners every day and they sit next to me because in Canada, we're all technically foreigners... :)
I wasn't, now I am, then I won't be anymore.

If at all possible no. Nothing to do with foreigner though, I'd prefer not to sit next to anyone. Having people inside arms length annoys me, even if they are the same color. I always attempt to sit alone, and also give other people their own space.

Perhaps it is the needy way your eyes flit from boarding passenger to boarding passenger, yearning "please sit next to me" that is putting people off. Or you live in Alabama.

stuff like this always surprises me. I was commuting to London daily during te height of the irish bombing campaign. If I saw someone walk away from a bag, i would stop them and ask if it was their bag. If I saw an unattended bag, i would report it immediately - but THOUSANDS of people would ignore the situation, or just nudge each other "oohh Ethel, there's an unattended bag!" Seems many brits would rather be blown to kingdom come than cause a scene!

Never mind foreigners people don't like to sit next to anybody here. On the local trains the seats are in blocks if 4 (Two seats facing two other seats), and what usually happens is that people will primarily try to sit in an empty block (on a seat next to the window) the next person after that will sit on the opposite side next to the aisle. Once those two seats are taken it seems people would rather stand than sit next to somebody else, leaving half of the seats empty.

Not here though. There are rare exceptions where the seats are arranged as you say. They are close enough that your knees touch the person before you if you're over 5' tall. Bloody genius who thought of putting them that way.
