Having just completed a 3 week driving trip to Spain - excellent place, I am wondering just how dumb some of the decisions by Google really are. When plugging in the UB to the local hotel wifi chrome starts with the .es extension and then asks me if I want to translate the page. How bloody stupid, it detects that I am in Spain or using a Spanish ISP/IP and changes the home page. Then it detects the default language, WTF. Why change the home address away from my .sg one (I would use a .au but of course Google won;t let me). Then to really piss me off when I get home Google insists that I log in to use Chrome, I just want to use the fucking search facility not play footsie with your data collection system. I may have to go back to FF!

Oh, I know what you mean. Chrome detects that I'm in France, and redirects me to Google.fr, wtf? If I manually type (from my phone mostly, it's what I use to access the webz nowadays) Google.com, it redirects me back to .fr. This is getting really, really annoying.

It looks like you've already found the solution to your problem! If you don't want Google's data collection, you need to stop using Chrome. BTW, Firefox has really improved since version 3.6, so it might not be an unpleasant change ;)

Try using the No Country Redirect suffix:

          www.google.com/ncr

I use Firefox at home and at work. At home if I search using the google toolbar it uses .co.uk and I get UK results. At work it uses .com and I get UK results. This is a massive pita if I'm doing some shopping related search, and I cannot work out how to change it.

You can have 5 for that suggestion, mind you I'll take them back if it does not work  How the bloody hell did you happen to find that, it seems there are a few of us pissed off with Google's latest iteration of Chrome.

No idea - it annoyed me once too often, so I found a solution. Didn't make a note of where I got it though...
