First of all: I'm not saying that I'm downloading movies off the internet - That would be both illegal and immoral, so that option is automatically ruled out. :~ But let's just for arguments sake say that I WAS. In that case, I would definitely wonder: Why the HECK do people still insist on dividing the movies into two CD-size files? That had its place back before DVD's were cheap enough for everyone to buy... How many people are burning a movie onto CD instead of DVD these days? And wouldn't most people just view it on their computer? And isn't that easier if you've got the whole movie in ONE file instead of having to break in the middle of the movie to start the "CD2" part? Or is it that these people are incontinent and desperately NEED the toilet break in the middle? But as mentioned: All this is completely irrelevant speculation when you're not illegally downloading movies...

I divide them into 12 bits, just to piss off people downloading them illegally.

Because they fail. Not everyone does this. Usually it's either one big file (and the nfo, of course), or a stupid multipart rar (probably with a password, to waste your time).

Tradition? Plus I seem to remember reading somewhere that some file sharing sites have a size limit for free users - it may be that on CD worth fits into the "free" category and larger ones you have to pay to download. Wouldn't know myself, obviously!

Because doing otherwise would mean reconfiguring the decoder/compressor, and that will cost them a phone call to the 14-year-old whiz-kid who did it for them in the first place.

It depends on how you're getting it I guess. Some sites have file size limits (if you're going for a direct download), so that's a way to get around it. Torrents might be that way because someone got it from one of those sites, and didn't bother to unpack it. Also, some sites offer money based on number of downloads, so if someone has to do multiple downloads to get one file, it's more money for them.
