New laptop - i5 or i7?
-
For those of you who have recently acquired new hardware of the laptop type. Did you select I5 vs. I7? Why? Do you notice the difference? I have to replace a 4.5 yo development laptop, and I'm trying to justify the price tage of an I7. But I beat the snot out of it with compilation runs - meaning the solid state disk is what will make the most difference. Thoughts and/or opinions?

Charlie, last year I built a new desktop - based on the i7 - and bought my first laptop - an i5. I honestly cannot tell the difference. Granted, I don't run ArcGIS Info or Photoshop on the laptop, but for more mundane tasks the laptop gives me all the performance I require. If there are no features unique to the i7 that you regularly use, I'd save a few bucks and go for the cheaper model.

I am also going to buy a laptop, but I have decided to buy an i7 after reading this[^]

We've found it doesn't make that much difference - unless you want hyperthreading (8 logical cores), in which case the i7 is the way to go. I suspect i7 machines eat the battery quicker than i5 machines, though. Rergardless of which you choose, do yourself a favour and make sure you have at least 8GB of RAM. Either CPU will be hamstrung if you only fit 4GB, slugging your disk and therefore battery in consequence. FYI in our recent tests (on a desktop box, but a laptop should be similar) the extra RAM trumped the SSD in the effect on compilation and static analysis time.

I used to have an i5 in the notebook at work and an i7 in my computer here at home. It's unfair to compare them directly since I built my PC for performance while the notebook was the usual compromise between price and performance. With that in mind, those two machines are worlds apart. In now more than a year the 'what a nice machine' feeling has not yet worn off. The i5 probably would have looked a little better if they had given it a little more memory, so that's something you should look at, no matter which CPU you decide to take.

If you go for i7 make sure you go for i7-37xx series, since it has VT-d(Virtualization for Directed I/O). This helps you largely, if you want to work on different platforms simultaneously with good performance. Also, i7 has HT(Hyper Threading) technology which i5(2nd Gen.) doesn't. Although this doesn't help for gaming, since most of the games available do not support hyper threading(I have read about this)
