volley ball season

So, among other reasons, my daughters first sport is coming up. She has volleyball next month, and has been excited about it since she started school. [side note] We home schooled my daughter until this year, when we sent her to a private school. [/side note] I am thinking I will take a break from training at the gym in order to support her and be at all her events. My thought was to use p90x as well as distance running to keep in shape. I worry that it's not intense enough compared to how I train now. It will save me loads of money, time, etc though. What do you guys think?

umm, I think your daughter needs you more.
If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.-John Q. Adams
You must accept one of two basic premises: Either we are alone in the universe, or we are not alone in the universe. And either way, the implications are staggering.-Wernher von Braun
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.-Albert Einstein -
This guy[^] has 3 excellent books full of routines and programming advice geared towards combat athletes. You can't beat the information or the price. There is also the crossfit WODs, but they are a little on the pretentious side. [edit]edited to be less of a jerk :sigh: [edit]

You will have to tailor your regiment to fit your needs. In losing 105 pounds I discovered the key to elite performance training is change. P90X is so successful because it's constantly changing the pace, methods, type, intensity of the workout. Every time you do a P90X session your body get's it's @$$ kicked. I have not ever done P90X but I've observed it and seen the merrits. Abstracting the concepts into my own exercise I have to admit the science is sound. Distance running is highly static and predictable. If possible very your terrain. Interlace interval sprints of different intensity, frequency and duration (in the same session). Sometimes rest for a minute between bursts and others rest (meaning keep running just at a recovery pace) longer. Just make sure that longer rests are followed by longer, higher intensity or a group of short, highly, intense bursts at randomized periods. I think that if you don't understand how to approach this on your own I'd recommend two courses of action. One consult a trainer (expensive). Two go to an elite running store in your area, try on shoes and talk to the employees. See what they are doing. Additionally, hit your outdoor exercise areas and spot elite athletes. If possible contact them and request a few minutes of their time to get tips and suggestions. Maybe, if it seems appropriate, ask if you can tag along for one of their sessions. I think there's tons that you *CAN* do. But what I want to conclude with is *JUST* - *DO* - *IT* and don't over-think it. :-\ The frog has spoken. Ribbit();
There have been joys too great to be described in words, and there have been griefs upon which I have not dared to dwell, and with these in mind I say, climb if you will, but remember that courage and strength are naught without prudence, and that a momentary negligence may destroy the happiness of a lifetime. Do nothing in haste, look well to each step, and from the beginning think what may be the end. - Edward Whymper Climb On!

I'm almost at 100 lbs this year. It's not like I'm clueless about how to work out. I wanted p90x for the variations so I don't have to come up with new workouts myself. It's easier to have a guided workout, and I get that at my mma gym now in the fitness classes. I like to distance run. I use it as a supplement to any workout.

You daughter is far more important than your training. You can always train, but you can't always have those moments with your children that you will regret missing in years to come.

She'll remember you being there for her, more than your MMA record. The group I work out with do P90, so I do it a few days a week. Why distance run? Your fights are short, I think you'd get better return on time investment doing sprints, even longer sprints or intervals, than straight distance running. Maybe try swimming? That will kick your ass.

I started running distance to burn fat and build lung capacity cause I was a fat smoker :D It just kinda stuck after that. I like distance running. Everyone says that about sprints, and I do do sprints sometimes. I figure that I do enough interval training for the short round bursts that the distance running wont take away from that.

I didn't mean to imply that you were. If I did please forgive me. I was typing that while writing code and thinking in the background.:rose::java::rose:

I missed your 100 pounds. I lost mine 4 years ago and haven't inched a single pound back. I feel good. Congrats to you on being in the 100+ club. It's a huge achievement and if you are like me, you cannot fathom how you lived before. ME: * Self-esteem: SUCKED * Self-image: I felt naked everywhere. Hid behind as much clothing as I could. * Jog a short distance (end of street): Hah! My legs wouldn't even hold me up. * Eat: What do you mean? Are we allowed to stop? Never! * Marriage: Sucked. My wife has 8% body fat. I had like 99%. I hated my life and now that I have it back I guard it zealously. You feel the same? :thumbsup:

My wife and daughter were both heavy as well, as were the families on both sides. We were just continuing in ignorance without really knowing there was a problem. Eventually, when I scaled in at 260 and my feet were swelling up so bad I couldn't put on my shoes, I decided that I'd had enough. I was also having emotional problems that came from my body being all out of whack like that, and there was a lot of stress on my marriage. On top of that I have back problems, and my wife is diabetic. The difference in our lives can't be conveyed. We never knew what we could have, and I'm very happy we have taught my daughter good habits while she is young. She won't have the same problems we did now. Once you get in shape, life is amazing. I never knew how good you could feel. I feel better when I'm sick now than I did normally then. I don't have to conserve my energy for the day (and not do anything) because I know I'll recover directly after I'm done doing whatever it is. It's just dramatic.

Yeah, that sounds about like a true "ditto" if never I have heard one. I was tipping in at 284 and I am about 5'10" unless I'm in bragging mode. Then I'm 6'2" and weigh in at a sculpted 204. :-\ I love that I'm not drinking 3 (1000 calorie) mocha drinks a day because I was always *so* tired. I have major back problems and I'm sure that losing the weight was pivotal to me still being able to stay somewhat active. I'm right there with you in about 100 ways I bet.
