Back Pain
-
So it started a week ago. Pain in the lower back, above the hip, to the right of the spine. Quite sharp, and can feel it in my entire pelvic region. Has anyone dealt with a pinch nerve before? If so, how long did the pain last? I know this place is full of medical experts ;) I'm just seeing if anyone's dealt with it before. It's either a herniated disc or a pinched nerve judging from what I've read. I'm going to the gym to stretch it out during lunch.
This was the source of the first part of my back injury. It was a bulging disc in my case because of degenerative disc disease. All it really is is the muscle irritating the nerve. The causes can vary. You need to get the muscle to relax in order to get it to go away. I actually recommend going to the doctor for this, which isn't really normal of me :D They should either give you a shot in the back, muscle relaxers, or both. They'll offer a quick fix. Whatever you do, don't just hope it will go away. I got nerve damage that way. If you don't go to the doctor then alternate heat and ice 20 minutes each, letting the skin recover temperature between. Stay off your feet until it gets better, and if possible soak in epsom salt. Before bed, apply muscle rub since you can't heat/ice while sleeping.

That's really not good that it happened during a press. Oddly, mine started on a Monday out of the blue, before my gym time, and I hadn't worked out since the previous Friday. The fact that you felt it happen, :shudder:, I'd be worried about a hernia there. Mine hurt the breathe, sit, or lean forward at all for the first 3 days. I laid on my back any moment I wasn't at work.

Sounds pretty similar to mine, though mine isn't intense at all. Still, wouldn't want to make a minor issue into a big one by exacerbating it. Thanks for the tip... I'll research it a bit more when I get home and talk to a doctor if it seems appropriate.

I developed something very similar when I started my new job. The desk was set very low so I swapped it for an adjustable one and got a riser for the laptop. I don't normally get any back trouble so I knew something was up, changing to a higher desk has sorted it out.

Sounds like your sciatic nerve is pinched. Go to a chiropractor.

I was giving myself a week to heal. I know it can be kidney related. It was getting better about every 2 days, but it's just lingering at the same level since Friday.
I repeat: go see a doctor, don't be a hero. Ok, I know I didn't say the last bit before but I am now. Might be kidney stones. I'm not a doctor, I have no real idea. Given that you say you're a comedian it could just as likely be a torn funny bone.

I will not go so far as to call them quacks, as I know people who claim to have benefited from them. I personally, will stay away, as I have an even bigger underlying condition: =[^] which I have been warned that most chiro's view as endless $$$$$$. I might find a place to get a massage just for the temporary pain relief.
Hemiparesis - "most related to the brain or spinal cord". Chiropractors focus on the spinal cord. Just saying. Something to think about.

As opposed to doctors? :)

That's related to the cause of hemiparesis. It's from a brain injury, as opposed to something like a spinal stroke, which can cause it for some people.

Yes, as doctors know there is not much more they can do for my condition at this point. Chiro's will never accept that, and prey on people that won't accept it either.

My experience has just been the opposite.

Do not stretch it. You will piss it off and it will smite you like you are a pain-addicted maven craving another knee to the groin. Leave it alone and rest.

My second son had seizures when he was 1. The doctors did the EKG, MRI, CAT, and every other test. They said he was perfectly normal and nothing was wrong with him. Seizures are normal? All they did was look at readings from a computer. Their last option was to put him on seizure medicine for the rest of his life. And one of the possible symptoms of seizure medicine is seizures. Then we found out about NUCCA chiropractors. They had a scanner that measured the voltages on his spine and his measurements were off the chart. His spine was getting pulled in every direction. After one adjustment he has never had seizures again. When our little ones would get fevers, a typical doctor would say to put them on antibiotics; however, antibiotics weaken their immune system. We would let the kids fight the fever and if they could not break it we would get them adjusted by a chiropractor. Instantly every time the fever broke. I have countless other stories. That isn't to say that all chiros are great or that all doctors are evil. Some just do crack and pop but everything runs through the nervous system and when the spine is messed up it messes up all kinds of things.

I've been dealing with a similar pain for about a year now, and haven't a clue what to do about it. I'm certainly not going to a doctor, as the last time I hurt I did so, and came out missing some internal organs. I suspect a problem with the sciatic nerve, since the pain extends clear down the leg into the foot, but I haven't figured out what to do about it. Since I'm starting construction on a new power line across the desert and mountains outside Laughlin, NV in two weeks, maybe the hiking will straighten it out.:~

Meanwhile, I believe in the scientific method. It saved my life, and subsequent treatments kept me from being an invalid.

Not sure what you mean specifically by that. There is nothing unscientific about chiros. I am not saying don't go to a doctor. They have their place. But even the FDA, who approves medicine, did a report in 2008 or so and said there were 500,000 unnecessary back surgeries performed that year.

I've had muscle pain in my lower back caused by weak tight muscles from sitting all the time. I also did a number of exercises that made things worse, bike riding and weight machines. Once I started doing full range of motion exercises like deep squats the pain has gone away. Some temporary active release work[^] done by a chiropractor helped too.

Me too! About Tuesday. I increased the weight on a few exercises and tried to increase the weight on the leg press, but couldn't do it, so backed off (I'm also doing single-leg leg presses, since the machine has a low weight limit, and that strange position probably didn't help). A couple reps into a leg press a bit later and I felt a twinge in my lower right back. Feels a bit like somebody jabbed me there. I can only really feel it when I take a deep breath, or twist/bend in certain directions. I figure I'll give it another week or so before I bother a doctor with it, but I'm going to stick to cardio until it resolves.
One thing that helped me out is focusing on getting full range of motion rather than going for max weight, also I really needed some help from people pointing out when my back started bend because I had no body awareness. Doing things like goblet squats helped me a lot with that.

Hey... Just so you know. You wouldn't feel a pinched nerve. The sensation that usually gets misnamed as 'pinched nerve' is really a bad muscle spasm. Stretch it out. (edit: don't stretch it by cranking your back around or straining other muscles... look up proper stretching technique or get help from a second person) Something inflamed? (usually comes with the mess!) Get an ice pack on it and get it some rest. Get that inflammation down. I see you already are planning to deal with the doctor so good job there.

There is a lot of animosity between doctors and chiropractors, and they will mostly bash each other. It sounds like you are listening to the doctor point of view. I have found that if you go to either one, they will pretty much happily treat you forever until you are either fixed or your money runs out. I went to a chiropractor for some back problems 2 decades ago and he successfully fixed my back issue. During the visit he also found and fixed a pinched nerve in my neck that I didn't go to him for and didn't report to him, which I was just tolerating. I was quite happy with the results on both counts. I would suggest that you give the chiropractor a fair chance. Remember also that if you go to a doctor and get surgery, this changes everything in the body's structure and is not reversible. If you plan on seeing both chiropractor and doctor, go to the chiropractor first.

My mate suffered from these exact symptoms a week ago. I would ask him what he did about it but he's dead now.
