I'm 90% certain I will be buying a 15" MacBook Pro Retina with max specs (and most every accessory, including a wireless French keyboard) tomorrow. I'm almost certain it's stupid to spend that much money on a computer, but I am compelled to do so anyway. Please, please, PLEASE list reasons I should not do so. For the love of God, give me some reasons to regret this purchase so that I don't go through with it. I beg of you!

This is fairly simple - if you need/like it and can afford it the buy it, if not then don't. If you are financing then the decision should be based on your situation not on the opinion of a bunch of geeks here on CP. You can be called a troll for dredging up this MS/Apple crap all over again! Personally I would never choose to own an apple product but that is just me!

ON a serious note - try out the kbd first... I really dislike the small bluetooth Mac one - and love my large wired Mac one. The DiNovo Edge looks marvellous, and you can always use whiteout to paint French accents on the letters :)

I may get something like that for work, where I will probably not be typing much French and will want my setup to work nicely. Now that I think about it, I will probably want an external wireless mouse. Any advice for that? Do the Mac mice have a right click yet?

I won't attempt to talk you out of it, as I did something incredibly stupid this past month, and I don't regret it a bit. I hope you have the same, deeply satisfying result. :-D Since I know you'll ask, I'll confess. I took a loan out of my 401k plan at work. My account is tiny anyway, owing to a loss of twelve years of prime earnings due to being laid off in 1992 and unable to find meaningful, above-subsistence wage work until 2005. My intent was to buy a ATV to use while building the new power line beginning in two weeks, but it turned out that they are far more expensive than I thought, and my credit is so lousy that no one will lend me the difference. I figured at the time, since Obama seemed the obvious winner in November and all my investments are in the stock market, after the election my 401k wouldn't be worth a dime, in any case. So I bought stuff I've long wanted, but couldn't justify to myself in normal days (pre-economic apocalypse), to wit: I bought my favorite lady a car - $500 - and a travel trailer - $400 - and spent a considerable amount to fix both up for her - another $500 and more to come. After those purchases, I told her, "now that I've bought you a car and a home, I suppose you'll be wanting a divorce next." She responded by paying me back some of the cost of the trailer. :laugh: She was in danger of losing the house her father signed over to her to a tax auction, so I paid off the back taxes - she has since repaid that. I think the divorce remark got to her a bit, especially since we haven't yet been married, and she hasn't yet developed any interest in doing so. :sigh: I got a new table saw - $600 - most of the tools made by Ryobi - $600 - a utility trailer - $600 - a propane generator - $600. Notice a pattern here? My pain point seems to be around $600. Weird, but that's the way it is... I paid for another semester of school - $2000 - and books - $300 - but Amazon had a good deal on a new, 54 Mbps wireless router, so I bought that, too. I got a freezer - $200 - to keep a few of the bulk food bargains available from Sam's Club to tide me over, but which I'd never before had the room to store. It's comforting to know that, when we run out of pigs next year, I'll have 7 cf of frozen bacon hoarded in my shop, and only a few of you know where I live. ;P I upgraded my oxyacetylene tanks from 40 cf to 80 cf, which allows me to weld much thicker steel safely, and got a great deal. The shop manager had quoted me $400 to $600 for the upgrade a few months ago, but since then the

Yep - they do have right click. the touch mouse thingo takes a bit of getting used to - can be a nuicance if you brush it lightly and find your page scrolling about. I used one of the touch pads for a while too - quite liked the idea but in practice couldn't get used to it. Worth trying the touch mouse if you can borrow one - they are a bit pricey just to use for a regular mouse)

Do you like the unit? Does it do what you need it to do (and: please check this. For instance, I go insane trying to remote desktop from my Mac to me Windows machine because Ctrl+arrow gets hijacked). The keyboard is a little weird. There's no optical drive. Does it have USB3.0 (I'm losing track - I know the new 13" has 2 of 'em). If you're cool with all of that then get the thing! They are lovely machines. Yes, more expensive, but they are pretty robust and my Macbook has outlived a couple of cheapo windows lappies. I'm still tossing up between a Toshiba z930 and a Macbook Pro 13", but the rumours of new Ultrabooks coming in November have me holding off just a liiiitle longer. You only live once. Be happy.

Not yet, and not professionally, but I am always looking to expand my horizons (the company I work for also paid a lot to have an iPhone app made, so who knows if I end up using these skills professionally). My friend did let me borrow his Mac for a few days a while back and I made a small iPhone application. Was challenging/fun, and I'm excited to be able to share fun stuff I make with my friends who own iOS devices. And I have some ideas for things I want to make for myself.

If it is not yet, then you can't be for sure osx will be your future, it would be wiser to spend less on a apple product until you know for sure you are going to do it for real. Would it not be better to by a cheaper one. or a mac-mini etc.

I see your point. Because my last laptop cost me $500 and has many issues (powers down randomly, freezes, can't play Blu-rays or run VM's), the money I saved on that purchase justifies paying more for this purchase. Got it!
I didnt think Macs could play blu rays anyway. Something to do with Apple refusing to implement the Blu-Ray system requirements. If I remember corrctly, Windows has a whole hidden layer to ensure the video data is always encrypted and protected to prevent its possible theft. To the point of only writing encrypted data to the page file, etc. Apple have wisely said sod-off to the blu-ray people on this, hence no blu-ray support. Yes, blu-ray video data is treated more securely than any other data on a windows system, tax record, medical records, financial records, not as important as a movie.
