I should send today's Dilbert[^] (and maybe yesterday's[^] too) to the, shall we say, "gentleman" who keeps ignoring my mail? Or maybe I should just go on as if he didn't exist. How long do you think is an acceptable time to reply to an email? Some people think it is OK to ignore mail completely (when I'm clearly asking for a reply). Personally I feel it is the same as ignoring someone who is talking to you.

There isn't one. If you have a time requirement for a reply and you did not provide that, how will the other person know? Are you expecting this person to drop everything that they are working on and reply to you immediately? Maybe whatever it is that you require from this person is going to take some lengthy research on that person's part. Perhaps your email has been forwarded to someone else who can better take care of your request. The possibilities here are endless. :)

There isn't one. If you have a time requirement for a reply and you did not provide that, how will the other person know? Are you expecting this person to drop everything that they are working on and reply to you immediately? Maybe whatever it is that you require from this person is going to take some lengthy research on that person's part. No offense, but during a particulary bad point in my life dealing with depression, I had a psychiatrist tell me, "If you think you are being ignored, you are placing far to great an importance upon yourself". It took me a while to understand that the world didn't revolve around me and my needs. Just trying to advise you not too fall into that same trap. :)

I guess it depends on the culture, the person or his situation/location! Sometimes I'm sick in bed or in a trip where I have no access to a secure network and if people judge me why I don't reply, I'll not be happy in such states. I also know some people check their emails once a decade so I don't take it serious in that case either. To sum up, I first try to find out what happened if I really like (in my case) her. :-) I learned that by a bitter experience!

Generally when I don't reply to an e-mail, it is because what I have to say I want no legal record of. I can always feign innocence if they call HR and say I ripped of their head and pissed down their windpipe in person, but if I do in an email it is easily proven. Either that or I just don't care. ;P

None taken. You're right, I'm being overly sensitive about the mails, but the "gentleman" in question has other charming qualities too, which I don't feel like going into right now
