It's a little blowy here in Toronto and we're expecting 100kmh gusts overnight (though it seems we've already had a few close to that). Hearing a few bangs as things fly about, but in general we're well out of the way of the serious stuff. Anyone closer to the path? You holding tight? Must be a little noisy right now.

Sandy was HR lady at my old company, but I was never close to her... if that you were asking. On the other side Stack Overflow relocated their servers from NYC.

With close to a million people without power, we're probably missing a few members tonight, but according to CNN the actual casualties are still fairly low; let's hope it stays that way! Which leads to another thought I had tonight, while reflecting on the fact that my email server is located in New York. Now that we're becoming more accustomed to having online relationships with people who we've never met, and these are often replacing real, eye-to-eye relationships, we need to come to grips with the fact that some of these people will simply disappear. I once calculated and posted the fact that, statistically, something on the order of 63 of our members will die each day, and we'll hear nothing about it. How will that affect our expectations for "real" relationships? I can think of a number of long-term impacts on the way we deal with relationships, none of them very desirable. Any thoughts? We might as well discuss something while the power is out...

The number's probably less than 63/day due to our demographic being generally young(ish), but yes. Of those here, who would have a loved one post a message saying "au revoir" for the person that's shuffled off this mortal coil?

when I played WoW hardcore, we had a guild member from China that was an awesome player and all around nice guy. One day he simply stopped logging in. It was about two years after that that I quit playing, and in those two years we never heard a peep from him. Was saddening to wonder what had happened and to know that we would probably never find out.
I'm beginning to hate the news...the world was much nicer when I was illiterate Be careful which toes you step on today, they might be connected to the foot that kicks your butt tomorrow. You can't scare me, I have children.

Aside from the storm surge (~20 foot rise in water) I don't get why this storm was so hyped up. People in Florida (that see cat5's) must be confused at the coverage. This was hardly even a hurricane when it reached land. I think the hype is regarding the size of it. The Western edge is about to reach Chicago, with winds gusting (~30mph) before it. It is getting annoying that every weather event in NYC makes national news (low power hurricanes, small blizzards).

I actually have that written in instructions (not a formal will) to my closest friend, along with some other final wishes for her to carry out, if she will. I once, years ago, had a deadman switch rigged on my server to make some final postings on various sites, and delete a number of personal files that no one has any need to see, but I removed it. It's just a bit too scary to have something like that around, waiting to fire accidentally.:suss:

Keep in mind that, back on the East coast, they close everything for 2" of snow. I used to get a laugh out of that every time Washington, DC closed for a tiny storm, while I was driving to work down a mountain covered with 4' of the stuff and thinking nothing of it.
