It's up to you how you treat this - as an opportunity, or an end I've been on 'redeployment' for 2 years (technically, redundant) - but they keep needing my skills - I keep promising myself when the axe eventually falls, I'll see it as an opportunity (likely wont feel like that to start with ....) btw, 23 years ! Congratulations... Last time I got laid off (after 5 years) I got no severance... But I did land a much better job in about 2 weeks (salary, benefits, work conditions).

That's a shyte thing to happen. I'd say welcome to my world but it's kind of crowded and I don't think you'll hear me bleating among the rest of the crowd. True, my last job went well until the hard cash-strapped reality of working for a small firm bit me for the third time in as many years! :) All the best, mate. Edit: Don't you guys in the US get redundancy pay? Here in the UK, if you work for a firm for more than two years you get a week's pay for each year over two years. Good firms factor in a multiplier like the one did that I worked at for nine years. The first £30K was tax free. I enjoyed nine months off until Mrs. W started getting a bit rat-arsed about me being at home and she was out bringing in the bacon. :-D

The job market is still good here in the Dallas area; I think several other big cities are doing fine, too. If you lived here, you could probably get 5 offers in 3 weeks for more than you made at your previous place.

Work as a contractor. Got laid off in April from Intel (hated working with the new guy they hired anyway). Before that got laid off in July of last year by Station Casinos (really the wrong person for the work they wanted done). Before that May of 2011 wtih Microsoft (reorganization set the project back), before that August 2010 (project being significantly reduced with project being delivered) (I did work for the State of Utah in between). Before that May with CentraAlert (two senior programmers ended up with serious illnesses, and they pretty much shut down the program). Don't feel too bad. At least you have pretty permanent work (these days 7 years is an eternity for a job)

They re-incorporated the company. We all had to sign new job offers with the new name. The terminated everyone 1 month later. So we didn't have any history for the severance. I knew a few folks with 30+ years there.

Well, I work in the front office, so when a fund/group/team gets shut down, it takes me down with it. If I stayed in the back office or the IT department of a larger firm, I'd have it easier.

In this part of the world (the UK) that's covered by TUPE [Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment)]. You take your rights of employment with you to the "new" company. I would have thought this would be the case in any civilised country.
