Found my coat and grabbed my hat... Then took 3 months and partied and drank myself silly until my unemployment ran out. Then got another job. But that was like 25 years ago.
It was broke, so I fixed it.

I completely understand that one but I had no wife an kids so that was less stress to rebuild

Which time? 1984, 1994, 2002, or 2009? :^) It gets easier with repetition. Update resume and online sites. Apply for unemployment (if applicable). Consider relocating (not to your mother's basement). Learn some new technology.

The environment where I worked was so toxic that I assumed I was being called into the office to be formally charged with sexual harrassment or some sort of hate crime. My fear was due in large part to the fact that we had a woman in our office that could claim anything about anyone and subsequently torpedo their careers. She'd been doing this for years. When I saw that I was only being laid off I had to concentrate hard to not smile while the HR person droned on about various incidental bits of nonsense. I was given 6 weeks pay and a relatively graceful exit. Walking across the parking lot that day is something I'll never forget. Don't remember the last time I felt that alive and happy. My first task was to write a letter to the company noting that I was told by management that I'd be guaranteed continued employment if I put in 40 hours of overtime during the previous month - which I did. They responded by cutting me another check for that time. It was a great summer.

I guess I'm fortunate to have never had to deal with this experience. Though, at the last mine that I worked at, I left about 12 months before I would have been laid off. But at that time, my wife was working and we had a 6 month old daughter who needed to be looked after. I still have the Mr. Mom hat. :)

For my most recent layoff (of four, I think) I met the others who got laid off in the parking lot and tried to figure out how the choices were made. We never did figure it out. Then I went out to lunch with former colleagues from the company I'd left just eight months before. In between, I got pissed off since I was really enjoying my project and I'd been minutes away from running a final performance test using the Intel C++ compiler.

I asked if they wanted me to stay for an extra week to finalize all of my stuff to make the transition easier. Then I thanked them for the opportunity and let them know that if an opportunity arises they should let me know as I am always in the market. Then I relocate to my next contract or gig, or site visit. Drinking when upset only helps burn bridges

I went straight to a pub, but I was in too much of a downer to drink properly. I only had 7 pints, but lasted out the night, didn't feel like going home. At the end of the night I walked a girl home that I knew, then carried on walking around the outside of the town. About half one in the morning I was walking down the bypass when an unmarked police car with its lights flashing went flying past me and turned off into a lane into the countryside. I kept walking. About 20 minutes later the same car pulled up alongside me. Turned out someone had stolen a car, rolled it down the lane, and then legged it. Because I was the only person they'd seen walking anywhere near the place they nicked me on suspicion. I was breathalysed, and passed. I told them my tale, didn't know the house number of the girl I'd walked home. Knew the name of the road and that it was the first house on the right. I said "It might be number one". So they got on the radio and sent another cop around to check my story. They knocked number one, the people there had never heard of me. I later found out my friend lived at number two, number one was first house on the left. Anyway they eventually let me go home, told me not to go anywhere without telling them. I never heard from them again.

Touch wood this hasn't happened to me yet, but I would: - Go to the gym every morning - Send my CV out (already up to date as I update it regularly anyway) I don't think I've ever looked for a job for more than 2 weeks so I would hope to not be out of work too long.

It's only happened once and more than a decade ago at that. It was in high pressure telephone sales, so in hindsight it goes down as the happiest day of my life. I headed to the local for a massive drink and waited for my ex-colleagues to finish in the office so I could say goodbye properly.

I am so happy I am leaving this company. I have been living in misery for 7 years. But as Pete said a few threads above, it is going to be extremely rough for me, if I don't find something new in the next couple of months.

First thing? Laughed in my soon-to-be-ex boss's face until he was good and furious. Once I left the building I started swearing in a language last spoken by some nameless teutonic demigod as eldrich fire burst from my head, chasing away tourists (I work in Times Square) as the overwhelming smell of sulphur descended upon Broadway and 50th street. (Or maybe I just drank a whole lot of bourbon and read a bunch of crappy Forgotten Realms novels.) EDIT: This was last Thursday. I'm in Lame Duck land 'til next Friday. *twitch*

I've only been laid off once, the other times I've quit. That one time actually I was waiting for a response on a different job, since the response came a week later and was favorable, I would've quit anyways, also, during the last month on that job I also had a job teaching a .NET course so in the week between getting the response and offer on the new job and getting laid off, I still had something to do with pay (and working 14 hours a day in two different things, even for as little as a month, really broadened my perspective of things). By the way, I was actually happy that day, the work environment there was bad,and so when I left, I did so with a smile on my face.
