In your opinion. In the right form factor, it's actually very good.

Hardly. I'm using Windows RT on my Surface and Windows 8 on a 4-year-old notebook (non-touchscreen) and am quite pleased with it. My wife also has a Surface and wants me to upgrade her notebook to Win 8 as well. And she's not an IT person.

I just googled "zephaneas" and it came back as a direct translation to "Apple Fanboy" :)

Well played, sir.

On anything but a mobile device, it's crap.

If you can't permanently turn off the tiled interface, I ain't interested... EDIT =============================== But it appears that you CAN: Windows 8 Classic Shell[^]

"Why don't you tie a kerosene-soaked rag around your ankles so the ants won't climb up and eat your candy ass." - Dale Earnhardt, 1997Good grief, John, it's the Start menu! If you're using desktop apps, you're only going to see the tiles when you need to launch an app (at least once you're at the desktop). But if you're satisfied with Windows 7, no one is forcing you to upgrade. I didn't really expect you to be one of the hand-wringers over the new (and improved in my opinion) design since the desktop is still there.

I'm not a hand wringer. I simply don't use a computer the way Microsoft insists that I should.

That's for sure. :) That said, I fail to see the reason for people's angst over the new Start screen. If you spend your time at the desktop, you're really not going to notice it much -- again, only when you go to start an app that you haven't pinned to the taskbar. I realized that I'm officially a fanboi at this point, but I'm also a desktop user, for app development at least, and am satisfied (to say the least) with Windows 8 on my non-touch, 4-year-old, notebook.
