Has the guy that wrote this article never heard of version control before? He makes it sound like people are still manually copying the code from their computer to their coworker's... Also, he sure spends a lot of time talking about the editor/collaboration aspects of these things while continuously calling them "online compilers"...

I've used them during tutorials (ex. jQuery) but the further application of an online compiler, idk

I'm guessing he's in a more collegial setting and there is some fodder here an there in the article

If you use the mbed prototyping board, then online compiler is your only option

I think you mean PLC? No, mbed is a ARM7 based prototyping processor board, kinda like arduino microprocessor, but it uses a arm processor instead of avr
