My current chairmat is starting to come apart; bringing back the age old question: do I drop $60ish on a mat I know will end up cracked inside a year and in the trash within two or do I blow 2 or 3 times that on a heavy duty mat in the hope it's even half as durable as their marketing claims imply? Have any of you tried choice B long enough ago to know if the higher prices actually give corresponding lifetime increases? Choice C, ripping out the carpet and putting a hard surface I"d just need to protect against scuffing isn't an option because I rent.

Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason? Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful? --Zachris Topelius Training a telescope on one’s own belly button will only reveal lint. You like that? You go right on staring at it. I prefer looking at galaxies. -- Sarah Hoyt

Choice D: Buy cheap chairmat + 4'x4' piece of 1/4" plywood. Cut plywood to shape. Drill holes in the four corners through both mat & plywood. Hammer nails into floor to keep both lined up and from moving. I've done this before. Lasts forever. -- Ian

If I was only concerned about not destroying the carpet perhaps; but it's squishy enough that my wheels sink so I need something solid to go overtop...

I bought a single box of "wood" flooring from Sam's club for $24.95 and some cheap edging strip from Home Depot. The wood flooring gives me a 4' x 4' square that sits on top of my carpet, the edging strip keeps it together (it is interlocked but the edging strips makes it more definite) and makes it look nicer. A friend of mine saw this and then used two boxes because he had a wide work area and rolls back and forth on it. My "chair floor" has lasted 3.5 years now without noticeable wear and is easy to move back into place when it moves over time - no spikes to jab your fingers on like the old plastic mats did. If it eventually wears out, I'll just ditch it and make another. I did think of (and buy) Liquid Nails to hold it together but didn't use it and haven't needed it. If you have thicker carpet it might help - just make sure you let the Liquid Nails set before putting the "mat" on your rented carpet.

Pah! Chair mats are for wusses! :) My office floor is made from hand-cut flagstones. They've been there for over a hundred years, and they ain't gonna wear out anytime soon. ;P
