Govt Job or Private job???

in your opinion which is better and which type of job should i select in future.?? Govt Job : Less salary than private sector, Less working timings(usually 6 to 7 Hours). Privae job : High salaries, 9 hour + late sittings, high work load, no time for family or friends. BTW am software engineer.

That depends whether you care more about money or about having time to do other things and having a balanced life. I'd take the first one, for sure.
I recently switched job , thinking that office is near to home so i could save some time but useless. :(

In my opinion, I would choose a job that I like, I am happy doing and which does not mess up my work-life balance.

Its more of a subcontinent topic. I see my friends in Europe well salaried though they are government employed. May be it depends on the job as well.

I've seen it work the other way around. Private job: penny pinchers. They try to find ways around minimum wage laws and often succeed. Govt job: your main job is to burn money. Developing software as a side effect is a nice bonus. But it depends.

Instead, you should figure out what business domain you want to work in (health care, finance, etc), and find a good job, be it gov't or otherwise. Staying in a single business domain will help your expertise carry across jobs even if the technologies used are a bit different.

contract work : High salary, 4 Hours week, but family and friends are always working... then kill time writing codeproject article, and reading book... Curiously, this have the effect to make you even more valuable, so you can work even less. :p Not every contractor experiences that, I am lucky I guess, but I'm sure no private & Gov job get that :p
