VLC vs. WMP ?

This is, partially, in response to the recent "CCCC" thread, but I am also curious to know your opinion in terms of media players, and, I feel that: if I start a new thread, it will get broader exposure than if I just add this to the "CCCC" thread. Until recently, I only used VLC, then I began to notice that certain video files (.mkv format) showed a kind of grid-like pattern in the background that was visually disturbing: those same files, played in WMP, without changing any system settings in Win 7/64, or any settings in nVidia's settings for the GeForce 7100GS card, looked significantly better. Whether the apparent difference in visual quality is due to my somewhat atypical (?) hardware configuration: nVidia GeForce 7100GS driving a six-year old, 720p capable, 32-inch LG teevee, via HDMI=>HDMI ... I have no idea. On the other hand, certain video files, in several different formats, that play without error in VLC, cause a complete freeze of my Win 7/64 system when played with WMP: keyboard, mouse unresponsive; no BSOD; reboot required. And, your verdict ... is ? thanks, Bill

Like Colin, I also use Media Player Classic but it's now called Media Player Classic Home Cinema (mpc-hc). And the current/active development is at http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/ You can download the x86 or x64. I also run Win7/x64. It works for me when I watch movies with happy ending. :-D

I used to watch tons of anime, so i started using WMP, it was ok, but then switched VLC, and also was fine but i found that sometimes it just froze, never knew why. But the best i have found yet is the GOM player, plays a lot of video formats, is light weight and if you ever get a file for which you dont have the codecs to play it(it is not common to occur this) will show a message to a page where you can download the required codec.

I find WMP is more stable and has a way better design than VLC (which looks like it was designed for Windows 3.0, if that.) I use WMP for common audio (mp3 & wma) and VLC for uncommon audio and most movie files. (When VLC first came out, it constantly crashed on my computers, but the last few releases seem relatively stable.)

The Gom Player [^] looks interesting; I'll check it out, thanks. I see the Gom player does not support playing .flac audio files, which I listen to often, but it does support .ogg. I note that on CNet both Gom and VLC have over 48 million downloads [^]. Happy New Year ! yrs, Bill

You might not be able to "see" differences, but it many cases it would provide speed improvements. Lots of things in normal PC usage use the GPU to do things. There are tons of video cards out there that are exponentially better than yours for under $75.
