NASA to Chronicle Close Earth Flyby of Asteroid [^]. I especially like: "NASA places a high priority on tracking asteroids and protecting our home planet from them." Really? I get that NASA can track them but what the elephant can they do to 'protect' us from them? Unless Brucey is preparing to be launched with his trusty team I think the best they can do is pray that the calculations are correct and nothing gets in the way! :-)

That piece that dropped into Russia yesterday, that was a chunk off of the one they blew up a few days ago... You didn't think they would actually tell us they were going to do that. The political fallout wouldn't give us enough time to respond. Bruce should be landing in Houston in a few days. :-D

It was broke, so I fixed it.

This is NASA we are talking about! Their Health and Safety rules would prevent any asteroid from hitting us. In the initial stages it would have to fill out so many forms it would get confused and miss, and if that didn't work they could just chuck the H&S manual at it and deflect it out of the solar system.

If we have enough time we can shift the orbit of the earth slightly by choosing a side, supply them with beans and all point in the same direction? Just a thought. :)

Sounds more realistic than anything NASA can do.

Actually, if we get sufficient advance notice, there are lots of ways to deal with it. I recall seeing a PBS show about it a few years ago. Using a satellite whose orbit will use gravitational influence to perturb the orbit of the offending asteroid. If the asteroid is rotating, then dumping white (or black) paint on it might be sufficient, as it will change the absorption/reflection of solar radiation, hence changing its trajectory. Lots of different solutions, and only a couple of them have anything to do with explosions (and all of those have to do with using explosions to change the course of the asteroid).

I think you'll find that there is a world of difference between knowing what to do and being able to do it.
