Why the obvious fake idendity?

Chinese and other Far Eastern people typically take a Western Christian name, so they're Wendy Wong or John Tang, probably because we'd fail to pronounce it correctly enough to actually be the same word. I haven't really seen many Indians doing this though, possibly because the main Indian languages aren't tonal so it's possible to pronounce Indian names without too much difficulty. Of course there's the ludicrous call centre etiquette of 'Hello, this is Fred, how can I help you?' in the most obvious Indian accent, as if they think we'll be fooled by it.

Every time I get a call from an Indian call centre (bank, credit card etc) and they say that their name is Kevin, Patrick, Mary or some such obviously phoney name, I ask them once if that is their real name. If they say it is, I then demand to speak to a supervisor to complain. If they say no, I ask for their real name and then ask why they have lied to me, and then ask for the supervisor. I explain that, for security and data protection reasons, they insist on me giving correct information, but do not afford me the same courtesy. The then usually spout some garbage about using "business names" because us poor brits cannot remember or pronounce Indian names. At this point I usually accuse them of racism, which they do not like. On the other hand, there are many Anglo-Indian families that do have western names - I work in an office near Manchester where people of sub-continental heritage are in the majority, and one of them has a very western name (forename and surname), so it's not beyond the bounds of possibility that John Smith is his real name.

It seems popular for Chinese, Indian etc. in contact with westerners to take on a western-sounding name. Just to avoid that awkward "And this ist "Kahitprati Prakavschitfockdamnwhydoyoubastardshavetonguebreakersasnamesiamgoingtokillyouallstartingwithjanicethesecretaryyesjanicesoyouseehowunreasonableiamabotuthis!"
No, That last name sounds Russian.

A person named "John Smith" (does that look fake to you or is that just me?) asked a question in which he repeatedly referred to the question as a "doubt". That's obviously Indian English. So ok, "John Smith" is obviously a fake name, but why? Anonymity? But then why not use a fake Indian name? If you're going to use Indian English anyway, it's not like we won't know you're really Indian.. and why would that matter anyway? Or, if you're going through the trouble of assuming an English identity, why not put more effort into actually appearing English? Plz resolve this doubt urgentz

As was pointed out to me fairly recently, there ARE Christian Indians out there, and they tend to take Western or Christian names. I say this as I had an Indian guy looking over my should whilst I was looking at an article and he pointed out they guys name and started laughing, saying this guy was taking "westernization" a bit too far. Come to find out the guy looking over my should thought Christians in India was, how can I put this in a kid sister safe way ..., not a good thing and laughable.
