New PC

I'm going to be building a new PC in the coming weeks, and I'm trying to decide on which processor to get: this[^], or this[^]? It's primary usage will be as a gaming PC, but I'll also be doing some development stuff on it as well. Basically, what I'm looking for is someone to give me a good reason to spend the extra $86 on the i7? Would it actually be beneficial for a gaming rig? EDIT: Never mind. I just found this[^] and my decision has been made for me. ;P Final Specs: i7 3770K, EVGA GeForce GTX 670 FTW, GigaByte GA-Z77X-UD3H motherboard, Corsair HX650 modular power supply, Corsair Vengeance 16GB (DDR3 1600MHz) memory, OCZ Vertex 4 128GB SSD, WD Caviar Black 1TB HDD, Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus CPU cooler, and Cooler Master HAF XM case.

Seriously? You're baulking over $86 out of a budget of what? Maybe $1000??? Spend the money and enjoy.

the i5 is still very good for gaming. More important, what graphic card are you looking at ?

Total cost is actually going to be around $1500, when you factor in OS, and peripherals(keyboard, mouse, speakers). $86 would be roughly 5.5% of that. In the grand scheme of things, it probably doesn't really matter; I just wanted to know if I would actually see much of a difference in gaming performance. A couple things I have read lead me to believe "No. I won't see a difference."

If you build it, they will come. The i5 is probably fine for almost anything you need now, but I'm pretty sure that at some point someone is going to come up with something that demands that extra power. (Not sure if they are still doing it, but 20 years ago Intel, specifically contacted the software company I was working at in order to encourage us to create software that was computationally intensive, just so they could boost sales of the new faster processor they were developing.)

Just saw your edit. Wow, that is quite a saving on that CPU (and they even listed the Newegg price $10 below what it is right now). If you don't plan on over-clocking, you could have decided on the i7-3770 (without the K at the end) and saved around $30, but if that latest site you found is legit, there is no reason to do that. I built my own machine just over a year ago and used an I5. It's a great processor, my suggestion though is to go for the I7 - always go for the highest spec you can and it is not that much more expensive so don't skimp on the processor. Get yourself an SSD for you OS drive too - you will definitely notice the difference.

x10 on the SSD. I have a core i5 and an above average graphics card. I'm happy.

The price was real. I bought and built everything last night. ;P (Check out my original post for final specs.)

I got a 128GB OCZ Vertex 4 SSD to partner with a 1TB WD Caviar Black. (Check out my original post for the final specs.)

I take it you live close to one of their stores then. Is that power supply sufficient? Seems like you might not have a lot of extra room, although I don't know what else you could need in that rig  Soren Madsen

There are 23 MicroCenter stores scattered around the country, and conveniently, I pass one of them on my way home from work. ;P The power supply has plenty of juice for the current configuration of the rig. I'm only using one of the 6-pin connectors on it, as well as both PCI-e 8-pin connectors. If I ever got another graphics card, I would need a new power supply, but I don't see that happening anytime soon with the 670.

The store closest to me is in Tustin (Los Angeles), almost 2 hours away :sigh:. I guess I have to look for deals that you don't have to pick up in the stores. I am kind of looking for an SSD drive for my existing system, but it has to be inexpensive, reliable and at least 120 GB (on my current system drive I am using 250 GB out of 512 GB). How did you decide the OCZ Vertex 4 was the right one to go with? Soren Madsen

This.[^] I didn't do a whole lot of research beforehand, but I saw it being recommended in two different gaming computer builds I found online, then I found this review. It seems like it definitely gives you the most bang for your buck.
