I am not lying. Do mouseover on my signature... Brad, so your saying you have the View>Status Bar> on the menu and works properly. Maybe it's my machine I'll reboot. No one else has Winxp Home, huh? Later,

Actually John Carson just pointed out that if Format>Word Wrap is selected then View>Status Bar is disabled. It's weird that they would disable the Status bar because word wrap is on. Brad Jennings "if the golden arches shut shop, where else are the VB people going to get work." - Colin Davies

After a little experimentation...it would seem that the status bar is an option if and only if you do not select Word Wrap under Format. John Carson

That is how mine works too (XP Pro). Makes sense though. The status bar shows line # & column for the text cursor. When word warp is active, there isn't a valid line # & column anymore because of the wrapping. Steve

Hmm, Notepad on my computer seems to work correctly. I'm using XP Professional though. I get kindof a similar error where the View Source option in IE works for a few weeks and then it quits working for a few weeks. JoeSox wrote: AAhhh darn, I was hoping it was MS but it is just me I still don't think that it makes sense. The status bar only shows line and column information for the cursor, as far as I can see. MS Word shows line and column information in its status bar even though it word wraps. The best interpretation that I can place on Notepad's behaviour is that calculating line/column information is slightly harder with word wrapping on, so the good folk at Microsoft decided not be bother and hid the status bar instead. Isn't this a problem with WinXP in general? Mine doesn't remember the status bar setting either in Explorer. LOL...here's the real way around that problem. First make the statusbar visible in explorer. Second goto folder options Third click on the view tab Fourth click on the button labeled "Apply to All Folders" Last close explorer and load it up again Now this is the way to get explorer to remember your view settings and what not. Paul...why so much trouble for the status bar ;). Enjoy

When word warp is active, there isn't a valid line # & column anymore because of the wrapping. Columns become somewhat ill-defined once you either right-justify (or center justify or ...) or use a non-monospace font. When you choose word wrap in Notepad, it does not right justify and the choice of font is entirely independent of the word wrap selection. Accordingly, I don't think that there is any good reason for Notepad's behaviour. As I note in another post, MS Word word wraps yet gives line and column information in its status bar. John Carson

When you have the "view/status bar" checked, then you can turn the word wrap AND the status bar on/off by clicking on "Format/word wrap". Now thats what I call and UI optimization :) :) Seriously, I think someone used the same ID for these menu entries. Anyone cares to check it?
