Looking back at my CV I see that the longest I have ever worked at one company was 7 years and 2 months. Most places it is around 18 months - which I understand is the industry average right now. I wonder which of you has the longest time at one job?

6 years at the last place was the longest, but previously worked 5 years as an employee then 6 more as a contractor for the same company. Does that really count as 11 years for the same company, especially since i contracted for other companies at the same time and ran my own business?

Make this a Survey! I am at 11 years, 11 months and hoping to make it to 12 years, but things are looking bleak at the moment. Soren Madsen

I have been at my current job for 22 years, 4 months, and 13 days. When I started here, my development machine was a 12 MHz AT class box with 1MB of RAM running MS-DOS 5.

One job for 14.5 years, and another for almost 10. A 3-year job, some short contracts and 6 years at current place

12 years, I've had 2 real jobs and the first one was 3 years and then I jumped ship when they decided to move from C++ & .NET to Java and Php. And no, I'm not trying to start an infected debate over platforms, just saying that I'm a C++ and .NET guy, not Java or PHP. :)

Almost 11 years in my current position as a DoD software engineering consultant. Before that I was an Air Force communications officer for 11 years. It was one of those deals where I left as a military guy on a Friday and came back to sit in the same seat on Monday as a contractor. I am 43 and have never has to interview for a professional job... ;)

Looking back at my CV I see that the longest I have ever worked at one company was 7 years and 2 months. Most places it is around 18 months - which I understand is the industry average right now. I wonder which of you has the longest time at one job?

Ha! Never taught that the numbers of years on the same job may tell somthing. In fact, it tells a lot, mostly about work ethics. I have worked 4 + 4 + 8 + 2+ on the same job. One thing I have to remark, you are in demand as long as you perform well at the benefit of others, just that. However, I drove the projects from one end to the other, long projects and with many ups and downs. I could resist just because in my mind, software developer is not just work, it means performance exactly as in sport. For me, quitting for whatever reason is not an option as long as I did not finished the project. I do not know what my life will become if I fail a project.
