Please share with me how you use your laptop adapter of course to make it live longer and longer possible. I really don't want to unplug the adapter from the power socket when I don't charge my laptop and plug the adapter again to charge my laptop. I wish it had a small contact/switch somewhere on the adapter's case for me to switch it on/off easily. And I let it be plugged in the socket all the time (24 hours a day). I think this may reduce the adapter's life span quickly. What about you? Thanks!

I don't think leaving it plugged in affects the lifespan significantly. If there is no load, the adapter draws hardly any current. The first thing I did with my new laptop was order an extra adapter. One stays plugged in at home and one stays in the case ready for travel. If it still concerns you, you'll have to put it on a power strip/surge protector. Another fun alternative would be the Clapper.

Leaving it plugged in is not likely to reduce the adapters lifespan - if anything it may extend it, as electronics tend to fail when the stresses are greatest, and that it's when they are turned on and off. With modern batteries it is unlikely to reduce the lifespan of that either - the dreaded "memory effect"they used to suffer from is pretty much gone as well. It'll use power, but not that significant an amount provided it is a good one - if it gets hot then you are better off within it anyway.

I order multiple power adapters and leave them plugged in where I use my laptop frequently (work, home). All of my power adapters have lasted years, and they are not expensive to replace. Why are you concerned about the lifespan of an adapter?

I don't think the adapter is the problem, it's usually the battery. Keeping it on charge constantly can affect the battery life.

Thank you, if it can live for at least 2 years (with the current usage) I will not concern about it too much, moreover there are many low quality Chinese products in my country and I'm scared of unfortunately buying one of those fakes in case of the current one dies, that won't be good for my laptop. (China is a northern neighbor of my country). Thanks for sharing... :)

I have had laptops fails, memory fail, on board video chips fail, hard drives fail, and screens fail. I have never had a laptop power adapter fail. In fact, I collect them and use them for other things, and they tend to be interchangeable with other devices (as long as the voltage is the same and the power is close enough.) Marc

I buy them cheap from your Northern neighbor and place them at work, home, etc. My theory is that the battery, which is expensive, will last longer if I keep it plugged in as much as possible. Seems to work.

Actually I have a question... Some of my friends say that when battery is 100%, then don't charge and charge only when it is under 50%. Is that the best practice ? I always plug in the charger, when my computer is on, otherwise I switch off the power supply. I don't know what to follow. Please advice... Thanks, Tadit

Same here ( plugged in all the time ) laptop battery life is pretty awful at best, if I'm travelling I take a spare battery and charger and my tablet for web stuff ( like this )

Modern batteries are pretty good - the older ones had a lot of problems with charge retention, called a "memory effect" where the battery would be conditioned by the way you charged it. If you only used a small part of it's possible charge range that that became all it would provide. So if you kept them always in the 80%-100% range, after a while when the battery got down below 80% it would run out very, very quickly (hence the name "memory effect" - the battery would "remember" how much charge it has had. Newer batteries are much better - I still think the first charge should be a full one, but after that they don't exhibit much memory effect at all. Charge it the way you want - it probably won't make any real world difference (except yours will probably have more charge than your mates when you need it not to run out on battery!) Personally, I charge by phone, my tablet and so forth all the same way - often and to the full charge of the battery. And my phone is over 5 years old and still it's battery lasts a week and a half. Herself who has the same phone is much more ad-hoc and frequently flattens her battery. Hers will last 2 to 3 days at best nowadays...

If you are concerned about 'vampire power usage' get yourself something like an Owl electricity monitor.[^] I have been using one for around 5 years and it's really interesting seeing what eats the current, my computer consumes very little and the kettle is the most power consuming item I have(which is why only filling the kettle with what I need saves me so much money). It will definitely pay for itself in well under a year - when I compare my power usage with friends I find that I use much less than they do, mostly due to just being aware of what consumes power.

Don't leave it anywhere that may reach sub-zero temperatures (unless you leave it plugged in, which might keep it warm).
