A friend just asked me this question. So I ask you: what is the std. average for getting a job offer back after an interview? I had an interview last Thursday for a position that I am really hoping I get. The interview went great, and afterwards I thought it was a done deal that I would be offered the position. Well, it's been a week and no word from the company. Is this a bad sign? In your job hunting experience, does it some time for a company to make a decision or am I hosed?

Tell your friend to call back and ask about it. Not only your friend will have an answer, whether it's a time frame on when they will make the decision, or your friend will have the final answer if he doesn't get the job. Not only you will get the information, but keeping contact should tell the HR person that your friend is still interrested and he is serious about he job-hunting. Max.

I've had a mixed experiance in the past. I've had one "MegaCorp" tell me they wanted to hire me right away and have had a small company wait 2 weeks to make me an offer. I think it just depends on the company. The best thing your friend can do is call the company and send and an e-mail to follow up. It might signal initative to the employer or something like that; plus it helps to get the ball rolling. "Veni, Vidi, Booyah!" - Ceasar

My current company took well over a month to make me an offer. X| But hey, it came. :) You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friend's nose.

I'd say a week is about average. I think he should not give up totally, but less than 30% chance he'll get the job. Christian No offense, but I don't really want to encourage the creation of another VB developer. - Larry Antram 22 Oct 2002
